Get your party on: 9/5-9/11

In keeping with our first holiday for the week, I have half a mind not to post this until tomorrow or beyond, as Sept. 6 is Fight Procrastination Day, and I feel like going against the tide on this one. I figured I better be timely about this holiday, though, for any of you who should be so inclined to actually put the practice of fighting procrastination to work. As for me, I’ll do it later. Jumping into Sept. 7, this is the date we are called on to celebrate Neither Rain Nor Snow Day. While this one does mark the 1914 opening of the New York Postal Service, the words inscribed on said building are not the motto of the United States Postal Service. That figures. It’s actually more akin (very closely … Read entire article »

Let’s just throw off the last two days in August and ring in Sept. 1 with Emma M. Nutt Day. Ms. Nutt was the first telephone operator in America. Working for a whopping $3 a day, she gave new meaning to the phrase, “what city, please?” She held the job for 33 years. As a tribute to Ms. Nutt, let’s reminisce with a little Lily Tomlin humor: This date is also Calendar Adjustment Day, followed by National Beheading Day on Sept. 2. Needless to say, I will not be adjusting my calendar for this one. I can find no logical reasons for either of these holidays (and I’m using the term loosely). Be Late for Something Day is Sept. 5. I’m prone to switch it up a little and be on time … Read entire article »

Let’s jump right in to this week’s holidays with August 15, which heralds National Relaxation Day. Again, the term “national” should give you an indication of just how serious they are about this one. I wonder if relaxation in the 21st century may sound easier than it actually is. It’s my experience that even when I’m relaxing, the wheels of my mind continue to spin. I suspect it’s fairly rare that I achieve a true state of relaxation. Maybe this holiday deserves a little more merit than it receives. In fact, maybe it should be incorporated into a weekly schedule versus being a yearly event. It’s worth a shot, right? So I hope you’re rested, because next up is “The Meaning of “is” Day, which should prod you to … Read entire article »

Let’s get serious for just a minute. How many times have you read “Palooza” and thought, “this is about food, plain and simple. All these people ever do is eat – or look for an excuse to eat.” Think about it! I don’t think even one week goes by without some mention of food. Most of it chocolate-y. I will likely quit writing when chocolate covered ants are given their own day. I’m just sayin’… Meanwhile, we have more chocolate to consume. I gotta give some serious props to this one though, as August 10 isn’t just about chocolate. Oh, no. It’s about marshmallows. And graham crackers. And chocolate. Yep, August 10 is  S’mores Day. Some of you may feel that S’mores can only be properly made over a campfire, therefore depriving yourselves of … Read entire article »

Well, I’m pretty bored with most of this week’s holidays. Not that there aren’t any – just that they’re pretty standard fare. I like the weird and wacky ones. Luckily for us all, we’ve got a few of those, too. I will deem these most important for celebratory purposes. If you want to commemorate any of the others that land this week, you’re on your own. That being said, let’s jump right in with our first big day, which falls on Aug. 5, bringing us National Underwear Day. You say you don’t have appropriate underwear to celebrate in? Fear no more. Fresh Pair has decided to turn the holiday into an “online underwear extravaganza,” and will be partying by giving away 5,000 pairs of free underwear. Just enter your name and … Read entire article »

Have you offended anyone lately? Been the troublemaker in the family? Have you been spreading general havoc? If so, there’s no better day to change your ways than on July 25, as we celebrate National Get out of the Doghouse Day. Even for those of you prone to that perpetual angelic state of being, you’d have to admit the best way to celebrate is by doing something you know is off limits, knowing that since it’s National Get out of the Doghouse Day, no one can stay mad at you for long. (Remember that timeless advice: ask for forgiveness, not permission…) July 23 is Hot Enough For Ya Day, to which I can currently respond, “no, it isn’t.” With highs in the upper 60s and lows in the upper 40s and low 50s, … Read entire article »

Welcome to another week of party central! Let’s get things rolling with Toss Away the Could Have’s and Should Have’s Day, which lands on July 19. I suspect we all have our lists of things we should’ve or could’ve done, but for whatever reasons, we didn’t do ‘em. So today is your day to forgive, forget and move on. National Get out of the Doghouse Day is this day as well. I hope none of you find yourself in the position of needing to get out of the doghouse, but if you’ve done something that met with disapproval, today’s the day to play the appropriate “get out of jail free” card and leave the doghouse to the true canines among us. Spooner’s – or Spoonerisms – Day is on deck for … Read entire article »

Ever wonder how the dictionary defines the term “geek”?  Looking at the first definition according to Merriam-Webster,  a geek is “a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake”. If that’s true, I’ve been misusing the term for years. Moving through the other definitions, the word is also defined as an intelligent-type/not-well liked (enter black square-framed glasses taped in the middle.) Last in the definitions, there’s the expert or enthusiast in a specific field (computer geek, for example). I mention this because July 13  is Embrace Your Geekness Day. While biting off the heads of live chickens and snakes is hardly up my alley, I propose we celebrate today by buying a pair of black-framed, thick plastic … Read entire article »

I trust you’re all out and about, celebrating freedom on this July 4. Let the fireworks begin! Meanwhile, let’s get to some of this week’s other holidays. Oh, the irony with these first two. Chocolate Day and Tell the Truth Day both happen to fall on July 7. I trust you see the problem with this.  If it’s Chocolate Day, it only stands to reason that we should (wait for it…) eat chocolate. But here’s the caveat: you’ll have to fess up as to just how much chocolate melts in your mouth. Otherwise, you will be in direct contradiction with this day’s other holiday. I really don’t see any way around this one, people. So my suggestion is quite simple: eat chocolate in moderation, today. Next up, get ready for quite a bizarre piece … Read entire article »

Let’s start the week off with what I consider a real doozy of a holiday on June 27: Decide To Be Married Day. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean if you’re single, you can decide to be married, and, poof, you are? Does it mean if you are already married, and experiencing a bit of turbulence that you make a conscious choice to stay married anyway and wallow in your misery? I suppose it can mean whatever you want it to mean, and am guessing it’s a good thing Decide To Be Single doesn’t land on this day as well… Moving right along, remember when Take Your Children To Work Day was in its height of popularity? Okay, it wasn’t really a high height – more like a molehill. … Read entire article »

Welcome to anther week of party central! As you probably know, today is Father’s Day. If you have a father and didn’t know today is his day, you may want to make a tie purchase in short order. Or you could take Dad out for a cold refreshing treat, thus killing two birds with one stone as it’s also Ice Cream Soda Day. I have fond memories of Dad and I going to the Rexall drug store. Back then, (when the store was in existence) it had a full soda fountain/counter/ cooking grill inside. What a treat to go with Dad, sit on those red stools and order a root beer float! Finally Summer Day follows on June 21. Honestly, it has felt like summer for several weeks, now. Come to … Read entire article »

Let’s be honest, here. It’ll be another week or so before we have a large line-up of holidays that make me feel like dancing. Meanwhile, here are a few good ones to celebrate mid-June. June 16 ushers in Bloomsday. At first glance, you’re probably thinking this one has something to do with flowers and summertime and all things nature. Nope. This day is named in honor of a character (from a novel) whose last name was Leopold Bloom. (You may have heard of the book: Ulysses, by James Joyce.) Here’s a brief summary: The novel recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin—June 16, 1904—as an ordinary Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses. Streets, shops, pubs, churches, bridges—something of Dublin … Read entire article »

Welcome to another week of wacky and weird holidays (where as you know, some are much more weird than wacky).Let’s get things going with June 6 – a date that I’m sure Kate already observes. It’s Drive-In Movie Day. While the drive-in movie joints still exist, they’re few and far between these days, which is really too bad. While I haven’t been to a drive-in in years, I still remember the ambiance of sitting in your car to watch a new release on the giant screen, occasionally getting out to go to the concession stand, which I always wanted to park close to. Movies without popcorn should be illegal. Anywho, I don’t know what the chances are that there’s a drive-in movie threatre near you. Just sayin’ that if there … Read entire article »

As you probably know by now, I babysit my neighbor’s terror cat whenever he’s out of town. Of course, he chose this weekend to head out, leaving the kids and I to deal with the little fur ball with beady red eyes. To make matters worse, I discovered that May 30 is Hug Your Cat Day. As the cat’s caregiver – albeit temporary – I feel I would be remiss if I wasn’t nice to the cat today. So yeah, I guess I’ll suck it up and be nice. Maybe even give the cat a hug. (Or maybe just talk the kids into hugging the cat.) Why me… Say Something Nice Day is June 1 – as is National Go Barefoot Day. (Hopefully my neighbor will be back by then, saving … Read entire article »

I must say that I’m terribly dismayed with the celebratory offerings this week. Not that there aren’t holidays – just none that float my boat. None I can sink my teeth into and have some fun with.  This week’s holidays are nothing short of total yawners. So I’m taking the week off. Why bore you with a bunch of holidays that don’t inspire a party atmosphere and leave you, well, let down. I did decide to make up my own holiday, and I’d encourage you to follow suit. Wednesday, May 26 was originally the last day of school for the kids. But because of snow (and the fact that the powers that be don’t schedule snow days into the school schedule), school is in session until June 4. They’re probably lucky they … Read entire article »
