(Almost) spring break – Liz’s rant

(Almost) spring break – Liz’s rant

We thought you’d get a kick over Liz’s little spring break mishap from last year. Enjoy! The chaos began about 8:15 last night, with a call from my brother: “Is Colton still up? Why isn’t he in bed, yet?” First, I’d like to point out that even on school nights, Colton is never in bed by 8:15. But I played along. “He’s on spring break this week – burning the midnight oil.” “Uh… you may want to  double check that.” What did … Read entire article »

Clean your clarinet – Liz’s rant

Well, this is just gross. Not surprising, but gross to think about, nonetheless. Especially seeing how Kate and I were both clarinet players, among other instruments. And we were pretty good, too (if memory serves). Who hasn’t been in the band for that matter – or at least given it some consideration somewhere between fifth grade and high school?? Well, let’s just say that this study may find you playing a different tune. Or at the least, you’ll be sanitizing the ol’ tuba nightly . A recent study from Oklahoma State University Health Sciences Center has found that a plethora of bacteria, germs and even mold are happily hanging out and growing in school band instruments. The results have led to a call to not only clean and polish the … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: School daze

I read an article the other day about how the start of a new school year is like New Year’s Day. And I suspect that’s true to a certain extent. The school year doesn’t begin at the stroke of midnight, though. Champagne doesn’t flow freely (ok, except for those parents who are celebrating the fact that little junior and juniorette will no longer be hanging around all day long, claiming there’s nothing to do). But there will likely be a few new resolutions made and a few high hopes launched. We’ll swear bedtime will be a smoother process and everyone will hop out of bed with a smile on their face as soon as the alarm goes off. Promises of a set schedule for homework, complete with a great snack, every supply … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants: Backpack blues

T-minus 9 days until the first day of school and we’ve received my third grader’s teacher assignment and school supply lists. Before “serious” conversation can occur, let’s dispense with the preliminaries, shall we? First came the question of why my kids had 67 days of summer break, while Phineas and Ferb have 104. And they asked the question as if I knew the answer, when my head is jello after a two-month break from school. I say, what’s wrong with the year-round system. (Of course I say that primarily to get their reaction: “Mohhummmm!”) Let’s start with Hannah. Oh, the excitement of her freshman year in college. A new backpack, a syllabus for every class, typically requiring the purchase of textbooks and a notebook or two, and countless hours of campus bookstore … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants – There must be some mistake…

As I rummaged through Colton’s backpack yesterday, I stumbled across a note, asking for my input in regard to assigning his third-grade teacher.  Instructions were pretty basic – check all boxes that apply. It sounded simple enough, until I read the phrases: Works well without instruction. Needs supervision to finish assignments. Flourishes in structured class. Works independently. Adapts to Change. Doesn’t like change. Prefers a more flexible environment. You get the point. I, however, didn’t. Enter my problems with this “questionnaire.” … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: When it’s just one of those days…

Ever notice how some mornings are just tougher than others to navigate through? You know – mornings when your 8-year-old announces that he forgot to mention part of his homework 15 minutes before you have to leave for school? I find it’s usually something as simple as that, that can set an entire day’s tone if I’m not careful. This morning held true to form. What began with a forgotten word search (crumbled up in the bottom of the backpack, mind you) continued with the realization that I’d forgotten to put the load of jeans in the dryer the night before. After a mad dash through the house to locate a “spare pair,” I hit ‘em with some fabric freshener and tossed ‘em in the dryer for good measure, made breakfast and got … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rant: On assignment

That’s right – Liz is on assignment currently, at a super duper really top secret location. She returns Wednesday. Maybe if you ask nicely, she’ll tell you all about her trip. Meanwhile, keep this under your hat, ok? It’s  a secret! So until then, here’s a favorite post from Liz’s Rants from way back in the old days before our website was actually a website to keep you entertained. – Kate Liz’s Rants…I hate homework Remember when you were in first grade? Those were good times – at least for me. Hard work meant choosing between the lilac or hot pink crayon. My, how things change. Flash forward to 2009 and my son Colton’s first grade class. The assignment was straightforward, stapled to a massive 11-by-17 sheet of paper, folded in half. In honor … Read entire article »
