Liz’s rant: The numbers game
I realize that as you read this, blood may very well shoot out of your eyes. But in the interest of getting the word out on what I’ve come to refer to as “bubble math,” I can’t help it. At this point, I can’t even muster a “sorry about the bloody eye thing.” It started innocently enough last week, during a routine homework assignment. But as I would learn, things were about to take a spiral into the abyss I will simply refer to as the numbers game. They call it mental math. I call it insane. This new mental math takes, for example, this scenario: 93-42. (It always starts so innocently, doesn’t it?) First you subtract the numbers in the 10s spot, leaving you with 5, then you subtract the number in … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Finally, my just desserts
There’s something you should know about me. It’s time for me to come clean. I bought a new purse this past Saturday and as I was making the switch-over from old purse to new purse it became clear to me that I have a serious problem. I have an addiction to gum. In this old purse alone I found 5 packs. A quick rifle through my other purses revealed 6 more packs. Yep…that’s 11 packs of gum. Now … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Quirky Observations
I’ve just returned home from a wonderful two weeks at Liz’s house. We did plenty of playing around, but also squeezed in some concentrated effort on a cookbook we are making, In the Kitchen with Liz and Kate: Practically Painless Recipes. (FYI…We’ll be taking pre-orders within a week or two, and they will be available for Christmas.) While there I couldn’t help but notice some quaint and quirky observations about the differences between my current state of Utah and my former state of KY. Observations: I’ve noticed the famous KY rolling stop is still the accepted, and preferred, means of stopping at a stop sign. When you are done drying off after a shower, you still feel completely damp. In the battle between my hair and the humidity, the humidity is clearly the victor. This is … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants: Backpack blues
T-minus 9 days until the first day of school and we’ve received my third grader’s teacher assignment and school supply lists. Before “serious” conversation can occur, let’s dispense with the preliminaries, shall we? First came the question of why my kids had 67 days of summer break, while Phineas and Ferb have 104. And they asked the question as if I knew the answer, when my head is jello after a two-month break from school. I say, what’s wrong with the year-round system. (Of course I say that primarily to get their reaction: “Mohhummmm!”) Let’s start with Hannah. Oh, the excitement of her freshman year in college. A new backpack, a syllabus for every class, typically requiring the purchase of textbooks and a notebook or two, and countless hours of campus bookstore … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: The ants go marching
Earlier this summer, a line-up of small, brown-black ants paid a visit to my kitchen counters, which really irritated me to no end. After all, ants have their place in the world – and that place is outside, thank you. Anywho, on my discovery, I grabbed the cinnamon – the same substance I’d used last year with one-application results: sprinkle and forget. It was my equivalent of swatting a fly with a flyswatter. One direct hit and it’s gone. Needless to say, I was quite confident that this one-stop treatment would once again work in a matter of two or three days, and I could get on with finding other reasons to stay out of the kitchen. I was right – at least for about three weeks. Not the first ant … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Which is better, 1 or 2?
Every single time I go in to the eye doctor’s office to refill my contact prescription, I get basically the same response from the lady at the front desk. “I’m sorry Kate, it seems your prescription expired 2 months ago.” Or… “Oh, it looks like your due for an exam.Your prescription expired 3 weeks ago.” Or… “Too bad you didn’t find a closer parking spot, Kate. Your prescription expired 43 seconds ago!” Every. Single. Time. And thus the tone is set for the remainder of the visit. Here are the reasons why I really, REALLY don’t like going to the eye doctor’s office (which I have affectionately nicknamed the optometry chamber of tortures). The visit starts off with a lie. They lead you to a dark room and have you sit in a chair and tell you to place … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – How to make fabric flower accessories
Last week I went to the Women’s Expo held at the McKay Event Center in Orem, UT., to see my daughter model some cute clothes from Peppermint Pockets. So while I was there I couldn’t resist taking a stroll through the booths to see what was new and hot this year for the woman who wants to be hip and stylish. This season it’s all about the accessories..big earrings, big necklaces, big purses, big rhinestone belt buckles, and lots and lots of fabric flowers on just about everything imaginable. Being the cheapskate that I am, I took one look at those pricey flowered covered tops and necklaces and figured I could make them myself for a fraction of the cost. I headed straight to the fabric store and picked up some … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants – There must be some mistake…
As I rummaged through Colton’s backpack yesterday, I stumbled across a note, asking for my input in regard to assigning his third-grade teacher. Instructions were pretty basic – check all boxes that apply. It sounded simple enough, until I read the phrases: Works well without instruction. Needs supervision to finish assignments. Flourishes in structured class. Works independently. Adapts to Change. Doesn’t like change. Prefers a more flexible environment. You get the point. I, however, didn’t. Enter my problems with this “questionnaire.” … Read entire article »
