(Almost) spring break – Liz’s rant

We thought you’d get a kick over Liz’s little spring break mishap from last year. Enjoy! The chaos began about 8:15 last night, with a call from my brother: “Is Colton still up? Why isn’t he in bed, yet?” First, I’d like to point out that even on school nights, Colton is never in bed by 8:15. But I played along. “He’s on spring break this week – burning the midnight oil.” “Uh… you may want to  double check that.” What did … dissertation sponsorship

Kate’s Escapades – Spring Break Frolic

We think this post from a few years back is worth a Second Glance, especially since it’s spring break and we’re off frolicking with our kids. Enjoy! Ahhhhh…spring break is finally here. Seems like we’ve been waiting for it since the day after school began last year.  A break from the routine of alarm clocks, bed times, endless homework, car pools, nagging.   I am as excited as the kids are.  It’s hard work to parent … Read entire article »

Kate goes on an Adventure to an Oxygen Bar

Kate goes on an Adventure to an Oxygen Bar

Kate Goes to an Oxygen Bar. Tag along with Kate as she makes an attempt at being cool, hip and trendy. Oxygen bars are all the rage these days among the young trendy yuppie types. While I’ll be the first to admit that I am neither young or trendy, I do occasionally try to be hip. My latest attempt at “hipness” involved putting pink plastic tubes up my nose and breathing  the scent of an orange … Read entire article »

Daughters, Marines and heat exhaustion – Liz’s rant

Last weekend, my daughter headed to North Carolina with her future in-laws (Lee and Cheryl) to welcome home our Marine, Adam, who has been serving in Afghanistan for more than seven months. There were months that went fairly quickly in retrospect, but some days seemed to take a year to get through. So I’m sure it comes as no surprise that Hannah was more than a little anxious to make the trip. As is typical with my daughter, she arrived in North Carolina making quite the grand entrance. I should’ve seen it coming I guess. The first sign that she was off to a rocky start came before she’d gotten out of the county: she’d forgotten the “welcome home” sign that she’d worked on so diligently. So she’d just have to … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Do you believe in the Vacation Fairy?

I am away on vacation this week…woohoo!yeehaw! While I’m away I’ve left a few of my favorite summertime posts for you this week. Enjoy! ~Kate Okay guys (and by guys, I don’t mean people in general, I actually mean guys, as in the gender laden with testosterone) this post is basically meant for you.  But if you fit within the estrogen half of the population, I think you might just want to read along for kicks. Guys, do you believe in the vacation fairy?  You must, right?  What other explanation could there possibly be for magically getting from point A, where you pick your vacation destination, to point B, actually arriving at said destination with everything you need for an enjoyable, stress-free trip? That’s all it takes, right?  Just pick a location, drive  … Read entire article »

Breast Milk Baby – Liz’s rant

Is there anything quite as fulfilling as controversy to kick off the week? I think not. So let’s just skip right over the pleasantries and get right to it, shall we? Yesterday afternoon, while browsing the weekend’s tweets, I came across a new product, brought to my attention by Cool Mom Picks. The product? Breast Milk Baby. That’s right. Forget the days of the little plastic bottle with the milk that magically disappears. This baby doll doesn’t drink from a bottle. Oh, no. It’s a pseudo-breast-fed baby. Now, your little girls (or boys, I suppose) can don a halter with fake breast-o-flowers, pull the doll close,  watch the doll’s mouth move and listen to the sounds of a nursing baby. Before we move on, … Read entire article »

Don’t paint your nails, Mom – Liz’s rant

I was really hoping to jump right into Fourth of July preparations today, seeings how the celebrating America’s independence is right up there with Christmas as far as I’m concerned. But the festivities will have to wait. Because I – or should I say, my son – apparently has issues with finger nail polish where all things “mom” are concerned. It’s the darndest thing, I tell ya. My first hint that something was wrong came a few nights ago, when I came out of Hannah’s room with her basket of 847 bottles of nail polish, to see if somewhere in the mix there might possibly be a bottle of bright red (the perfect color for the 4th of July). “What are you doing, Mom?” “I’m going to paint my nails. Do you mind?” “Yes. … Read entire article »

A daughter and her car – Liz’s rant

Have you ever noticed that when things are good, as a parent, you can rank right up there with the bffs of the world. But when things are bad, you’re suddenly enemy No. 1? Let’s just say I’m currently Enemy No. 1 on my daughter’s list through no fault of my own. It seems her car has a slight problem (at least that’s how the women among us would likely term it). It’s running super hot and leaking a fluid. Which wasn’t on my daughter’s list of things to take care of last night with a double-header softball game four counties away. So I took the car for a spin before she left. And when the hot/cold gauge (does it have a real name? Oh, what does it matter) goes to hot after … Read entire article »

Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets – Kate’s Escapades

A few days ago I bought a 42 oz. container of Quick-1 Minute Oatmeal on sale for $1.88. I figured it would be much cheaper than buying the instant oatmeal packets that my family is used to. The problem? My family expects things to be fast and easy. If all they have to do is empty a packet of oatmeal into a bowl, add water and pop it into the microwave for a minute or two, well, that’s doable. However, if the process involves opening an oatmeal tub, using measuring cups of TWO different sizes, adding sugar, salt, cinnamon, water…and then putting it all back away, whoa, way too many steps here. Plus, my kids don’t really like the texture of ‘real‘ oatmeal. Too oatmeal-y, they say. Not as smooth as the … Read entire article »

Homemade Automatic Dishwasher Detergent – Kate’s Escapades

We dirty a lot of dishes at my house. I have to run the dishwasher every single day. In fact, I could probably run it twice a day, but that is something I absolutely refuse to do. No one should have to do two dishwasher loads a day, so instead, I carefully place it all into one load, kind of like puzzle pieces. Suffice it to say, my dishwasher is one of my very best friends, but paying for the expensive automatic dishwasher soap is not. So today, I’ve got for you my recipe for Homemade Automatic Dishwasher Detergent. There are only 4 ingredients and it takes just minutes to make. Plus, it’s eco-friendly, if you’re into that kind of stuff. Give it a try! Homemade Automatic Dishwasher Detergent! 2 cups … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – ‘You get what you get, and you don’t make a fit’

As you regular readers know, Mondays and Wednesdays are Liz’s rant days, and here it is Wednesday and there is  nary a  rant in sight. That’s because Miz Liz in up to her eyeballs in boxes, packing up all of her worldly possessions in anticipation of a big  move into a new house this weekend. A house with air conditioning (HOORAY!) which I might add, would have been really nice to have when I was visiting her last summer and the heat and humidity were sucking the life out of me?  Just sayin’. Anyway, I’ve got your back, Liz. Take as long as you need, as long as that ‘as long as you need’ doesn’t spill into next week, in which case I would say, “Get your butt back to Coffee … Read entire article »
