Kate’s Escapades – Tips for Staying Toasty

Is it sooooo cold at your house that you feel like you’re living in an igloo? At this very moment, it is currently 3 degrees where I live. It is beyond nippy. There’s a huge ice storm moving across the country. No school once again at Liz’s house because of the weather. Are you feeling chilled to the bone like I am? Trying to find ways to get warm and toasty without cranking up the heater? Here … dating online south africa

(Almost) spring break – Liz’s rant

(Almost) spring break – Liz’s rant

We thought you’d get a kick over Liz’s little spring break mishap from last year. Enjoy! The chaos began about 8:15 last night, with a call from my brother: “Is Colton still up? Why isn’t he in bed, yet?” First, I’d like to point out that even on school nights, Colton is never in bed by 8:15. But I played along. “He’s on spring break this week – burning the midnight oil.” “Uh… you may want to  double check that.” What did … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Spring Break Frolic

Kate’s Escapades – Spring Break Frolic

We think this post from a few years back is worth a Second Glance, especially since it’s spring break and we’re off frolicking with our kids. Enjoy! Ahhhhh…spring break is finally here. Seems like we’ve been waiting for it since the day after school began last year.  A break from the routine of alarm clocks, bed times, endless homework, car pools, nagging.   I am as excited as the kids are.  It’s hard work to parent … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – April Fools’ Day Food Prank

Kate’s Escapades – April Fools’ Day Food Prank

Since April Fools’ Day is coming up in a few days, we decided this post from two years ago is worth a Second Glance... It’s finally here.  The day when I get to release my pent up immaturity…the day when it’s perfectly acceptable for me to feel mischievous and sneaky…the day when I get to be all the things I try to teach my kids not to be. I must confess, when I was writing yesterday’s ridiculous … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Santa’s coming!

Can you believe this is the week of Christmas? That in only a few days, Santa – the man in the big red suit – will be coming down the chimney? Maybe it’s just me but it seems like those last couple of weeks before the most wonderful time of the year always fly by. Sometimes, even that ritual visit to see Santa gets put off until the last minute. So this year, I figured I’d be one step ahead and actually plan the day for our visit. We headed to Lexington Green before 9 a.m. on Saturday. The plan was simple: I’d pick up a few things from the bookstore, and by the time we were done there, Santa would be arriving, Colton would divulge his wishlist, and we’d be … Read entire article »

Back to school – Liz’s rant

We’re at T-minus 3 days until the first day of school in our neck of the woods. Which means it’s time once again, to review the dreaded school supply list. Time to start going to bed a little earlier, maybe do a little last-minute studying, time to wish we’d done more over the summer break. Sigh… Time to ask probing questions, like: Are Ticonderoga really the best pencils? (Turns out that  yes, they are. And much to my child’s chagrin, mechanical pencils are still off-limits.) Does our county actually have a large enough stock to supply each child with one large bottle of hand sanitizer? Will this be the year we discover whether or not demerits are issued if we buy a 48-count box of crayons instead of the 96-count box? Is the request … Read entire article »

Daughters, Marines and heat exhaustion – Liz’s rant

Last weekend, my daughter headed to North Carolina with her future in-laws (Lee and Cheryl) to welcome home our Marine, Adam, who has been serving in Afghanistan for more than seven months. There were months that went fairly quickly in retrospect, but some days seemed to take a year to get through. So I’m sure it comes as no surprise that Hannah was more than a little anxious to make the trip. As is typical with my daughter, she arrived in North Carolina making quite the grand entrance. I should’ve seen it coming I guess. The first sign that she was off to a rocky start came before she’d gotten out of the county: she’d forgotten the “welcome home” sign that she’d worked on so diligently. So she’d just have to … Read entire article »

Breast Milk Baby – Liz’s rant

Is there anything quite as fulfilling as controversy to kick off the week? I think not. So let’s just skip right over the pleasantries and get right to it, shall we? Yesterday afternoon, while browsing the weekend’s tweets, I came across a new product, brought to my attention by Cool Mom Picks. The product? Breast Milk Baby. That’s right. Forget the days of the little plastic bottle with the milk that magically disappears. This baby doll doesn’t drink from a bottle. Oh, no. It’s a pseudo-breast-fed baby. Now, your little girls (or boys, I suppose) can don a halter with fake breast-o-flowers, pull the doll close,  watch the doll’s mouth move and listen to the sounds of a nursing baby. Before we move on, … Read entire article »

Don’t paint your nails, Mom – Liz’s rant

I was really hoping to jump right into Fourth of July preparations today, seeings how the celebrating America’s independence is right up there with Christmas as far as I’m concerned. But the festivities will have to wait. Because I – or should I say, my son – apparently has issues with finger nail polish where all things “mom” are concerned. It’s the darndest thing, I tell ya. My first hint that something was wrong came a few nights ago, when I came out of Hannah’s room with her basket of 847 bottles of nail polish, to see if somewhere in the mix there might possibly be a bottle of bright red (the perfect color for the 4th of July). “What are you doing, Mom?” “I’m going to paint my nails. Do you mind?” “Yes. … Read entire article »

Bubble Fun – Kate’s Escapades

Here we are only a few weeks into the summer break, and already the kiddos are wandering aimlessly through the house feeling restless and bored. This simple and inexpensive idea is sure to keep the kids, or grandkids, busy for at least long enough so you can whip up a delicious treat, catch up on a DVRed episode of your favorite reality show, or maybe flip through that Entertainment Weekly that’s calling your name. Homemade Bubbles 4 cups Water 1 cup grease cutting dish Soap – (Palmolive, Ajax, Joy, Dawn…) 1/4 cup Light Corn Syrup (this takes the place of glycerine, which you probably don’t have) container – plastic tub, gallon jug Just mix all the ingredients together and store in container. Now that you’ve got the bubbles made, what do you do with them? *How about some … Read entire article »

A daughter and her car – Liz’s rant

Have you ever noticed that when things are good, as a parent, you can rank right up there with the bffs of the world. But when things are bad, you’re suddenly enemy No. 1? Let’s just say I’m currently Enemy No. 1 on my daughter’s list through no fault of my own. It seems her car has a slight problem (at least that’s how the women among us would likely term it). It’s running super hot and leaking a fluid. Which wasn’t on my daughter’s list of things to take care of last night with a double-header softball game four counties away. So I took the car for a spin before she left. And when the hot/cold gauge (does it have a real name? Oh, what does it matter) goes to hot after … Read entire article »

Clean your clarinet – Liz’s rant

Well, this is just gross. Not surprising, but gross to think about, nonetheless. Especially seeing how Kate and I were both clarinet players, among other instruments. And we were pretty good, too (if memory serves). Who hasn’t been in the band for that matter – or at least given it some consideration somewhere between fifth grade and high school?? Well, let’s just say that this study may find you playing a different tune. Or at the least, you’ll be sanitizing the ol’ tuba nightly :-). A recent study from Oklahoma State University Health Sciences Center has found that a plethora of bacteria, germs and even mold are happily hanging out and growing in school band instruments. The results have led to a call to not only clean and polish the outside, … Read entire article »

The Ultimate Challenge (Minute to Win It) Party Games –
Kate’s Escapades

The Ultimate Challenge (Minute to Win It) Party Games – <br /> Kate’s Escapades

My son is now the ripe old age of 11. When it came time to plan his birthday party, we realized he’s at that age where little kid parties just won’t cut it any more. We figured there would be about 25 kids (boys and girls) to keep occupied for 2 hours. After a not so quick perusal of the internet for kid party ideas, I decided to plan an Ultimate Challenge party by modifying … Read entire article »
