Kate’s Escapades – Witches run Amuck!

Kate’s Escapades – Witches run Amuck!

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble. Do you know who we owe this great (often misquoted…does bubble, bubble toil and trouble ring a bell?) Halloween diddy to??? It’s none other than Mr. William Shakespeare. I love the month of October…the crisp air and crunchy fall leaves…the pumpkin patches and corn mazes…the apple scented candles and Fall break at school. But most of all, I love dressing up for Halloween, and most years you’ll find me … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Oh, rats

Liz’s rant: Oh, rats

Before you start thinking that I’ve gotten in the um, spirit of things where Halloween is concerned, let me say, “not really.” It’s just that I seem to be finding a myriad of ways to celebrate this holiday. Following through is another matter entirely. As usual, I’ll be going all out by simply getting the pumpkins carved in time for trick-or-treating. Nevertheless, I’ve come across quite a few spookily-themed foods of late. This one, in my … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: A bit of Halloween fun

Liz’s rant: A bit of Halloween fun

With less than two weeks l;eft before Halloween, I thought it might be fun to explore a few facts about this ghoulishly groovy holiday: Halloween Express recently caught a shoplifter. The punishment? The thief had to stand outside the store in a Bert (from Sesame Street) costume, holding a sign that read: I got caught shoplifting… Now. Does anyone else see the ineffectiveness of this? Or is it just me? Nothing rhymes with orange. Really. I’m not … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Disgusting Worm Salad

Today’s post is courtesy of my crazy friend, Whitney.   I’ll admit I  come up with some kooky ideas from time to time, but next to her I’m an amateur.  She takes sick and disgusting to a whole new level with this Halloween “treat”.  This one is only for the truly warped and brave… Disgusting Worm Salad by Whitney Hancock These edible worms are a BIG hit for our Halloween Dinner. Liz’s rant: Fast and Festive Fall Centerpiece

I needed a break from writing yesterday, but still felt the need to be creative. While I don’t really do much in the line of decorating for Halloween or Thanksgiving, I do enjoy bringing a touch of fall into the house. Just so you know, this isn’t a Liz Original. I think I ran across the idea at some point last year, when Coffee Break brought you the Craftdown to Christmas. And for whatever reason, it came to mind as a perfectly simple yet snazzy idea to try. Frankly, I’m pretty pleased. I think you will be, too! So here’s how you make this centerpiece: What you’ll need: A pumpkin or gourd Fresh or artificial fall flowers About 15 minutes How to do it: Cut the top off the pumpkin, as if you were making a … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Skeleton cupcakes – if you dare!

The kids found a recipe for these cupcakes and insisted we make them for Halloween. How hard could it be, I thought. I’m sure you can see this is gonna be a recipe and a rant, all wrapped into one post. What more could you ask for? In order to delve into this one, I took the original recipe and began by simplifying the cupcakes themselves. As you will see, they aren’t part of the ingredients photo, because I trust that you people know how to purchase a cake mix and make a couple dozen cupcakes. Anyway, in my opinion, the how-to’s of this project are all about what’s on top of the cupcake. So let’s start there with the nitty gritty. What you’ll need: A couple dozen cupcakes, cooled (note: you may or … Read entire article »

Get your party on: 2/14-2/20

By now, most of you have probably come to the realization that there is never a dull moment where holidays and celebrations are concerned. This week is no exception. So put down that heart-shaped box of chocolates and let’s get to it. February 17 is Champion Crab Race Day - a holiday right up my alley. I love crabs – king crab, snow crab, blue crab, even imitation crab. I’ve had pet hermit crabs. And sometimes, I act like a crab. In Oregon, the big day is celebrated just as the holiday’s name implies. Six contestants at a times (of the human persuasion) ante up $1 to $4. Six Dungeness crabs are pulled from a tank and assigned a lane on the race track, angled at 35 degrees to encourage the crabs to … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Are you sure he’s sick?

He’d been fine when he left for school. Then I got the email from Colton’s teacher yesterday: Please Pick Him UP. Well! Did he pull the fire alarm? (no, that would be my 25-year-old back in the day). Did he have a fever? (No apparently, he just wasn’t “himself”). And 24 hours later, after being tested for pig flu, he appeared ready to go back to school… Until tonight. When the fever hit 102.5 and any mother worth her weight knew something was wrong. But what’s wrong? Well, I don’t know that. Tomorrow may tell. Meanwhile, I offer up the advice of popping the vitamin C if you’ve got it, and donning the surgical mask if you can find it. And if anyone winds up sick, be prepared for the greatest concern, made perfectly clear by Mr. … Read entire article »

Guest Rant – Witches’ Night Out
by Linda Peterson

Witches’ Night Out Our family picked up a new Halloween tradition a few years ago – attending the Witches’ Night Out event at Gardner Village near Salt Lake City. Gardner Village is one of our required fall outings. It is a collection of historical buildings, a mill and some pioneer homes, which have been made into shops, a restaurant, and a petting zoo. They also have a venue for dinner theater. We stumbled into the whole Witches’ Night Out spectacle accidentally. A few years ago we ventured there on a Friday evening in mid-October, only to discover several elaborately costumed women dressed as witches wandering around. Thinking that they were employees adding to the festive atmosphere, we shrugged it off and made our usual stops – Sweet Afton’s, for … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – The Great Halloween Costume Challenge!

In case you haven’t noticed over the past few weeks, I LOVE Halloween.  Here’s the thing…I am the mom of 7 kids and I spend every day all day long being the grown-up, mature, responsible adult in the house. Halloween is the ONE day a year that I get to play dress up and be like a kid and pretend I’m someone else. According to an article in Women’s World magazine, “Dressing up for Halloween is not just for the kids.  You can release tension by wearing a costume yourself.  Dressing up for Halloween  has been proven to help adults de-stress by letting them reveal other sides of themselves that are normally stifled.  What a great way to be a superhero or a vampire, for a day, without worrying about looking … Read entire article »
