Peep-a-licious! – Kate’s Escapades
Since Easter is only days away, I’ve been out stocking up on my Peeps supply. Heaven forbid I leave my Peep shopping to the last minute, and to my horror, find the shelves bare of the ooey, gooey, sugary marshmallow treats. I would be forever disowned as head holiday empress of my kingdom. I love me some Peeps! Do you love Peeps, too? I’ve gathered a few peep-a-liscious ideas in case you’d like to impress your peeps … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – April Fools’ Day Food Prank
Since April Fools’ Day is coming up in a few days, we decided this post from two years ago is worth a Second Glance... It’s finally here. The day when I get to release my pent up immaturity…the day when it’s perfectly acceptable for me to feel mischievous and sneaky…the day when I get to be all the things I try to teach my kids not to be. I must confess, when I was writing yesterday’s ridiculous … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Fat Tuesday means pancakes for dinner
“(Tuesday) is Fat Tuesday, and of course, this being America, it will be followed by Even Fatter Wednesday, Obese Thursday and Fat-A** Friday.” –Jay Leno How much do you love a holiday that has as it’s main objective encouraging you to pig out? I’m talking about Fat Tuesday, of course, which just happens to be today. Or perhaps in this politically correct day and age, we should call it “big-boned Tuesday” or possibly “full-figured Tuesday”. You … Read entire article »

Cheater Chicken Parmesan
Here at Coffee Break we just LOVE our Cheater recipes. So what’s a “Cheater” recipe? It’s a way to end up with a delicious home cooked meal, side dish or dessert without spending lots of time to get there. This recipe was sent to us by Coffee Break reader, Susan Stephens. I (Kate) decided to give the Cheater Chicken Parmesan recipe a try this week to see if the family would like it. I took some pics … Read entire article »
Kate’s Escapades – Start some new Christmas traditions
Ornament Exchange Game
Christmas is a time for traditions, a time for making memories with your loved ones. When I ask my kids what some of their favorite Christmas memories are, they always seem to mention memories centered around our family traditions. For us, it’s what makes the holidays have that warm and cozy feel. I am a big believer in holiday traditions, and for my family it’s not just the Christmas routines, mind you, I’ve got traditions for practically every holiday of the year. If anything, I think I tend to ere on the side of OVER-doing it. But Christmas is the biggie, the granddaddy, the big kahuna of holidays. The other holidays are just warming me up for the grand finale holiday of the year. I’ve been at this mom business for a … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Thanksgiving Gratitude Tablecloth (Memory Tablecloth)
Ahhh…Thanksgiving. That often overlooked holiday sandwiched between Halloween and Christmas. You know, the one holiday that can’t really be commercialized, so the stores pretend it doesn’t exist? And yet, it is one of the most important holidays of all, because instead of focusing on material things and “stuff to buy”, we can spend this time focusing on family, gratitude and thankfulness…the things which are truly important in life. For the next few weeks, I’m going to share with you some fun ideas, tips and recipes to help celebrate this most wonderful Thanksgiving season. Today’s idea: A Thanksgiving Gratitude Tablecloth This is an easy and inexpensive way to start a Thanksgiving tradition in your home. The Coupon Queen – Liz’s rave
No matter where I live, there’s always one drawer that’s devoted to the coupons. I’ll note one exception: that was when I decided I was done with coupons and would never clip another one. What, you may be asking, could possibly send me so far over the edge that saving money seemed more trouble than it was worth? Enter exhibit A. The coupon drawer. (You know you have one, too. Admit it. It will make you feel better.) Oh, sure, I’ve tried those little pouches with a slot for all the dairy and all the frozen and all the meats and all the beverages. But the fact of the matter is, I still had no clue what coupons I possessed. Just because all dairy was in one slot, that cute little coupon … Read entire article »

Back to school – Liz’s rant
We’re at T-minus 3 days until the first day of school in our neck of the woods. Which means it’s time once again, to review the dreaded school supply list. Time to start going to bed a little earlier, maybe do a little last-minute studying, time to wish we’d done more over the summer break. Sigh… Time to ask probing questions, like: Are Ticonderoga really the best pencils? (Turns out that yes, they are. And much to my child’s chagrin, mechanical pencils are still off-limits.) Does our county actually have a large enough stock to supply each child with one large bottle of hand sanitizer? Will this be the year we discover whether or not demerits are issued if we buy a 48-count box of crayons instead of the 96-count box? Is the request … Read entire article »

Daughters, Marines and heat exhaustion – Liz’s rant
Last weekend, my daughter headed to North Carolina with her future in-laws (Lee and Cheryl) to welcome home our Marine, Adam, who has been serving in Afghanistan for more than seven months. There were months that went fairly quickly in retrospect, but some days seemed to take a year to get through. So I’m sure it comes as no surprise that Hannah was more than a little anxious to make the trip. As is typical with my daughter, she arrived in North Carolina making quite the grand entrance. I should’ve seen it coming I guess. The first sign that she was off to a rocky start came before she’d gotten out of the county: she’d forgotten the “welcome home” sign that she’d worked on so diligently. So she’d just have to … Read entire article »

How to make Harry Potter Wands
Unless you’ve been in solitary confinement in Azkaban for the past few months, you know that we are mere hours away from the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. At my house we are counting down the minutes until the magical moment. (It’s no secret that I have some Harry Potter fanatics in my family. You can check out the party we had a few summers ago to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince here.) Anyway, we found a fabulous craft to keep ourselves occupied, and to help us while away the hours until the big event at 12:01 on Thursday night. (Unless of course you’re lucky enough to be me this week. I get to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part … Read entire article »

Bountiful Baskets – Kate’s Escapades
I’m not sure how this happened, but apparently there’s a cool new shopping trend out here in Utah (and 14 other states) that seems to be all the rage, and I knew nothing about it! NOTHING! Not one thing! Nada! Thanks a lot, guys. I thought you were supposed to be taking care of me, you know, keeping me in the loop of all amazing new trends and finds. This cool new thing is called Bountiful Baskets . It’s a food co-op which uses it’s collective purchasing power to get fresh fruits and vegetables (and other assorted yummies) at great low prices, with the discounts being passed on to the co-op members (me…and soon hopefully you, too). I tried it out for my very first time this past Saturday morning in front of the Spanish Fork … Read entire article »
