Liz’s Rant: On assignment

That’s right – Liz is on assignment currently, at a super duper really top secret location. She returns Wednesday. Maybe if you ask nicely, she’ll tell you all about her trip. Meanwhile, keep this under your hat, ok? It’s  a secret! So until then, here’s a favorite post from Liz’s Rants from way back in the old days before our website was actually a website to keep you entertained. – Kate Liz’s Rants…I hate homework Remember when you were in first grade? Those were good times – at least for me. Hard work meant choosing between the lilac or hot pink crayon. My, how things change. Flash forward to 2009 and my son Colton’s first grade class. The assignment was straightforward, stapled to a massive 11-by-17 sheet of paper, folded in half. In honor … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – I Confess…I’m a Twilight Addict

I have a confession to make…I consider myself to be a  fairly well rounded, sensible, logical, mature grown adult woman…and my confession is that I am a Twilight fan. There, I said it. And not just a casual fan either. I’m talking midnight movie premiers, book signings, internet searches for the latest Twilight scoops…you know a slightly obsessed fan. (“Slightly obsessed”, now that’s an oxymoron for you.) It’s really the best selling Twilight book series written by Stephenie Meyer that I love. All the rest is just a bonus. This is how I became a Twilight addict. A few years ago my youngest daughter started reading this silly book about vampires, and I was thinking, “Really? Vampires? That’s gotta be kind of lame.” I picked … Read entire article »

Book Review – The Book Thief

The Book Thief Author: Markus Zusak 552 pages (and I loved every single one of them) Death is the narrator for this WWII-era story about nine year old Lisa Meminger, who is taken to Molching, Germany to live with foster parents in a neighborhood of tough kids, sharp-tongued mothers and hard working dads.  It’s a story of faith, love and hope in the midst of tragedy Here is an excerpt of Death’s narration… “The last time I saw her was red.  The sky was like soup, boiling and stirring.  In some places, it was burned.  There were black crumbs, and pepper, streaked across the redness. Earlier, kids had been playing hopscotch there, on the street that looked like oil-stained pages.  When I arrived, I could still hear the echos.  The feet tapping the road. The children-voices … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants – I hate homework

Remember when you were in first grade? Those were good times – at least for me. Hard work meant choosing between the lilac or hot pink crayon. My, how things change. Flash forward to 2009 and my son Colton’s first grade class. The assignment was straightforward, stapled to a massive 11-by-17 sheet of paper, folded in half. In honor of Dr. Seuss, each child was asked to pick their favorite author, draw a picture of him or her and write a brief biography on the inside pages. The front “cover” was to be a drawing of one of the author’s books. The back “cover” was for a summary of the book. I’d be willing to bet Colton doesn’t even know what a book summary is – let alone how to write one. … Read entire article »
