Real reviews for real people

Plot: A reporter (Ewan McGregor) delves into the world of psychic military regiments during the Iraq War in this adaptation of the Jon Ronson book THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS. George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, and Jeff Bridges star in the Smoke House/BBC Films production.

Director: Grant Heslov

Running time: 1:33

Kate says: 2 1/2 stars “Men Who Stare at Goats has plenty of  funny moments. Clooney and McGregor are entertaining. The drawback of this movie is that there is really no story to follow, just a series of funny clips with nothing to tie them together.  In my estimation, this is a movie I will probably have no recollection of a few weeks from now, but it was full while it lasted.”

Ebert says: 3 stars “Imagine “Ghostbusters” is based on a true story. Imagine the Dude from “The Big Lebowski” as a real-life U.S. Army general. All factual, right? That’s what “The Men Who Stare at Goats” sort of wants us to believe. I think I sort of do — to a small degree, sort of. “More of this is true than you would believe,” the movie announces in an opening title…The movie is funny either way.” (read entire review)

Reelviews says: 3 stars “The Men Who Stare at Goats is enjoyable to watch “in the moment,” but it doesn’t leave a powerful or lasting impact, at least insofar as the comedic elements are concerned.  As entertaining as the production is, however, the fact that it contains a kernel of truth reminds us of one damning truth: This is the kind of thing that American tax dollars are being spent on.” (read entire review)

Rotten Tomatoes Says: 59% “Consensus: Though The Men Who Stare at Goats is a mostly entertaining, farcical glimpse of men at war, some may find its satire and dark humor less than edgy.”
