Liz’s rant: The rule-breakers
Let’s just get it all out there right now. I’m the rule-breaker. And the rules I broke were my own.
Anyone who knows me also knows this is when I point fingers at others, too – just for fun. When I tell you that my 8-year-old knew exactly what I was doing. But instead of cautioning me, he cheered me on, adding that the long-standing rule of waiting until the day after Thanksgiving to listen to Christmas music was a little extreme.
We haven’t gotten much help from local radio stations, either, with two of ‘em already decking the halls 24/7 until the day after Christmas.
That being said, and in full knowledge that Thanksgiving is still 11 days away, I think it’s clear what all this could lead to: Holly Jolly Burn-out.
Which is why my “rule” is in place to begin with. But as the sounds of Mannheim Steamroller filled the kitchen, I had to question just how much burn-out could occur by filling the house with holiday cheer before my official countdown to Christmas begins.
I guess only time will tell. Meanwhile, my son wants to watch Home Alone. And if we’re gonna break the rules, we might as well go all out…

I say go all out! My six year old starting watching “Elf” and “Jingle all the Way” two weeks ago!!
I have to admit I love listening to Christmas music, even before Thanksgiving, if it is the good stuff (like Mannheim Steamroller, etc.) However, when the radio stations start playing the obscure stuff like the barking dogs doing Jingle Bells, it gets to be annoying. I guess the trick is to use CD’s, tapes, or in my case, records!!
That’s what I do – I have Mannheim and TSO, etc (and some of those classics like the version of Baby It’s Cold Outside from Elf, and the Dan Fogleberg Christmas song where the snow turns into rain, etc, haha) on CD for good measure. Isn’t it funny how we choose our favorites – and stranger still the effects they can have on our demeanor! (I feel one of my rants coming on.) And what about the Muppets Christmas with the Holly song (cuz we need a little Christmas…) HA!
