Coffee Break with Liz and Kate » Headline, writing a good research paper, »

lizandkatecupEvery now and then, something happens to restore my faith in humanity. Prime example coming on the heels of my need for Mexican food at lunchtime, yesterday.

Sometimes I like to get out, just me, myself and I, and have a quiet lunch. Maybe take a good book or whatever and just get away. So off I went to a neighborhood restaurant where I placed my order for a couple of tacos and waited on the chips and salsa.

My waiter, God love him, brought my iced tea, chips and salsa, then returned a few minutes later with a bowl of soup!

“You try soup, today? On the house?”

Are you kidding? Of course, I’ll try it.

It wasn’t like he’d just offered me a million dollars or anything – just a good, hot bowl of Mexico’s version of chicken soup.  Big chunky vegetables and pieces of chicken, cooked to perfection, some other thing that looked like tiny rice (there are my culinary skills shining brightly again…) all bathing in chicken broth and cilantro.

I love cilantro. So much so that I’d probably like it on ice cream. And it was that flavor – those little leaves and stems – that made me feel good inside.

It was more than just the soup, though. It was the hospitality offered for no apparent reason, reminding me that basic goodness still exists. That people are kind and thoughtful, sometimes for no other reason than because they can be.

Inside that bowl was all the proof I needed to know the healing power of soup.
