Liz’s rant: The burning bush that didn’t
It was about this time last year when I remember looking out of the window and seeing this huge, brilliant red object across the street on the grounds of St. Michael’s Church. It almost looked as if something was on fire.
On closer inspection, I realized the intense red color was beaming out from a burning bush. We were able to enjoy that burning red color for several weeks, if memory serves. In fact, it was still glowing after the leaves had fallen from all the other trees. But for some reason, I never thought to take a photo of it.
No matter, I thought. I’ll snap a couple this year.
As the kids and I headed to the store a couple of weeks ago, we commented on the bush as we walked to the car. About a third of the leaves were beginning to turn. All indications pointed to this year’s colors being just as vibrant – if not more so.
I’m sure you can imagine my total disdain when we returned from the store to see a tree service parked on the grounds
of the church, and freshly cut branches on the ground. As my eyes searched out my favorite bush, they were burning, alright.
Because this bestest-of-the-bestest burning bushes was GONE. Gone, I tell you. Nothing but a bunch of brown twigs left, and a few lingering leaves here and there. I had half a mind to offer the other piece of my mind to the tree service guys but thought better of it.
“Hope you’re happy now,” I wanted to scream.
I tried to take solace in the fact that there’s always next year – assuming the tree scalpers don’t make a return visit of doom.
