Well, here it is – the day we’ve all been waiting for – bulldog Murray’s first birthday! Happy Birthday Murrtaco!!

What’s that you say? You aren’t celebrating Murray’s birthday? Shame, shame.

I suppose you’re thinking this is a day to think clouds! Because as you probably know, not only is today my favorite bulldog’s birthday, it’s also the day ol’ Punxsutawny Phil waddles out of his hole in the ground today to single-handedly decide whether or not we’ll have six more weeks of winter. And if we have six more weeks of winter, my head will spin right off my neck. No pressure, Phil.

You may be asking yourself, “How did a groundhog manage to be appointed meteorologist for the day?” Heck if I know. What I do know is Groundhog Day has been around for more than a century. Who knew a groundhog could live to be that old (actually he drinks the elixir of life) – or be this famous? Take a look at a few of Phil’s other antics, courtesy of The Official Website of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club:

  • During Prohibition, Phil threatened to impose 60 weeks of winter on the community if he wasn’t allowed a drink.
  • In 1981 Phil wore a yellow ribbon in honor of the American hostages in Iran.
  • Phil traveled to Washington DC in 1986 to meet with President Reagan. He was joined by Groundhog Club President Jim Means, Al Anthony and Bill Null.
  • Phil appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show in 1995.
  • In 2001, Phil’s prediction was shown live on the JumboTron at Times Square in New York City.

Let’s face it – it’s not every day when a groundhog can gain such notoriety. Heck, the little furball even has a movie named after him:

Here’s the bottom line. We’ve had enough winter to last me about 10 years. Snow, snow, and more snow. Cold, cold and more cold. Yep, it’s been a dark and dreary winter to be certain. And now it’s all up to a groundhog to fix this nonsense. Because I’m ready for spring and I’m ready for it now. No pressure, Phil…

P.S. In case you’re wondering… yes, Murray was named after Bill Murray in honor of the movie Groundhog Day. :-)

I hear ya, Liz. It’s 8:00 am here on Feb 2, and according to the Weatherbug application on my phone it’s currently -3.4, with the “feels like” temperature being -20! Are you kidding me?! I’m counting on you Phil. (Btw…I saw Bill Murray at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. He is much taller than I expected and on that particular day he was on crutches but was so bubbly and jolly.)
