liz and kate twilightI have a confession to make…I consider myself to be a  fairly well rounded, sensible, logical, mature grown adult woman…and my confession is that I am a Twilight fan. There, I said it. And not just a casual fan either. I’m talking midnight movie premiers, book signings, internet searches for the latest Twilight scoops…you know a slightly obsessed fan. (“Slightly obsessed”, now that’s an oxymoron for you.)

It’s really the best selling Twilight book series written by Stephenie Meyer that I love. All the rest is just a bonus. twilight book set

This is how I became a Twilight addict. A few years ago my youngest daughter started reading this silly book about vampires, and I was thinking, “Really? Vampires? That’s gotta be kind of lame.” I picked it up and read the first few pages and, surprisingly, I didn’t hate it. By the middle of chapter 2, I was hooked. Hooked as in I could not put the book down. Hooked as in dirty dishes in the sink, unfolded laundry, and Wendy’s for dinner. Hooked as in staying up till 3am  that first night to finish the book.  But I couldn’t stop there…New Moon and Eclipse (books 2 & 3) were already published and calling my name.  Over the next week I completely neglected my normal life, my husband and my kids.  And when I was finished with those books, I kept myself satisfied with  The Host, also by Meyer, and internet tidbits about the upcoming movie version of Twilight.  It was a  torturous year long wait for the release of book 4, Breaking Dawn, where I would finally learn of the fate of my beloved Edward, Jacob and Bella.

I really am at a loss to describe why I love these books so much.  They are arguably not literary masterpieces, however something about Meyer’s writing sucked me in and made these characters, and their world,  seem real.  Her narrative style almost made me feel as if I were watching a movie while reading…a rare and wonderful experience.   I’d be embarrassed to tell you just how many times I’ve read through the series. (Let’s just say it’s somewhere above 3 and under 5)

I may as well tell you that I own 2  sets of the hardback books, all autographed by Stephenie Meyer (except for Breaking Dawn), and two autographed copies of The Host.  Stephenie had a book release party for The Host  at Thanksgiving Point in Utah, where she answered questions and autographed books.  (We waited all day to get front center seats.)

I read the Twilight books in secret now for fear of ridicule from my family.

I saw the Twilight movie 3 times in the first 48 hours after it’s release.  (I freely admit the movie was not great – but for some reason that does not seem to matter all that much.)

I went to the midnight release party for the Twilight DVD where Rachelle Lefevre (bad vampire Victoria) was autographing movie copies.

Now some of you reading this right now are probably thinking that I am some sort of nut case, including Liz who just doesn’t get the whole Twilight thing…but some of you (the ones who are grinning sheepishly right now) are thinking, “Wow! That’s me…she’s describing me!”   You know who you are.

And it’s for you (and me) that I’ve created a new category for Coffee Break with Liz and Kate…The Twilight Zone.  If you look just under the headline spot on the home page, in the bar that says “Browse Categories”, you’ll see The Twilight Zone,  second from the right.  It’s here that I will be posting future updates about the movies, books, author, actors and just about anything to do with the Twilight/New Moon/Eclipse/Breaking Dawn world.

bryce_dallas_howard_To start off this new category properly, let’s discuss the recent firing of Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria, and her replacement, Bryce Dallas Howard. Summit entertainment says Lefevre was fired over a 10 day scheduling conflict because of  a role in another movie.  She says that is ridiculous and is taking the case to court.

Enjoy your Coffee Break!

Tell me what you think.  Should Lefevre have been fired?  Is Bryce Dallas Howard a good replacement?
