Kate’s Escapades – Confessions of a LOST addict

2 February 2010 8 Comments

Today is a big day.  As in A…BIG…DAY!  Just ask any LOST fan. It’s the day we have been waiting for nearly 9 months. Season 6 of LOST premiers tonight, people.

I came into the strange world of LOST very late in the game. In fact, I have never watched a new episode  on TV with the rest of the world. (And because of that, I now have a wonderful relationship with Netflix.) I am proud to say that I am all caught up…5 entire seasons worth, and tonight I will be watching LOST with the rest of the crazies out there in the world.

m

Speaking of LOST crazies, I’d like to introduce to you Evie, a true LOST addict.

She will be joining us on Coffee Break with Liz and Kate as a special correspondent for the entire season, with episode recaps, her thoughts and predictions, and discussion topics.

And with that I am proud to present…Evie!

How I Became a Fan of LOST: Confessions of a JJ addict

by: Evie

A few years ago I was addicted to Alias, starring Jennifer Garner, and produced by JJ Abrams.  The only reason I started watching the show was because I liked to see Sidney Bristow play dress-up and fight bad guys while staying stunning and sexy. As the storyline developed, each episode ended with an outrageous cliffhanger. My husband and I watched the entire series in just a few weeks (because we would stay up until 4:00 in the morning, sometimes watching 3 complete DVDs in a row. Thank goodness for Netflix!). At the conclusion of that incredibly entertaining show, I realized that my habit was forming and Alias was only the gateway drug.

Next we decided to start watching 24, starring one delicious Lost Boy from the 80s Vampire movie. This was even more intense.

Then came LOST. I have to thank/blame my sister-in-law for getting me hooked. (Now that I think about it, she was the one who recommended 24 as well.) I lovingly refer to her as my heroine dealer. I became especially interested when I found out that JJ Abrams was the producer of LOST. No question about it, I had to add LOST Season 1 to the top of my queue.

The cast of the show was a bunch of unknowns to me, except the for the hobbit. LOST didn’t have the initial high-adrenaline “umph” that 24 did, but I was very intrigued by the intertwining stories; and each episode had me gaping in surprise. I am definitely a suspense junkie.

As with all addictions, the first thing you need to do is find a group. No, not to establish a 12-step help program, but to share your addiction with others. At the end of Season 3 we found some unsuspecting victims (aka our best friends) and we re-watched all three seasons with them in about 4 weekends.

By the time Seasons 4 and 5 premiered on TV, we had found others who shared our obsession and now that Season 6 is approaching I am making preparations for our 3rd annual premier party. If you haven’t watched Seasons 1 through 5 yet, stop reading this and drive to Blockbuster immediately.

All I have to say about the final season is this: How are they ever going to answer all my questions in only one season??!!!

I lied, that’s not all I have to say about it. I really don’t think it’s realistic to expect that every question be answered, but if you’re like me, you’ve invested a good portion of your life to this island and are anticipating this last season to blow us all away!

For the past couple of years I have scoured the internet looking up theories and information on the storyline and characters. Theories like “Hurley is in charge of everything” or “Rose and Bernard are the skeletons in the cave that Jack named Adam and Eve” or “The whispers come from those who died on the Black Rock” or “Everyone is dead except Hurley” or “The island is a machine like the Death Star”.

I’ve gone over and over in my mind how I WANT it to end but I never have an answer. Instead I will share with you how I DON’T WANT it to end.

  1. I don’t want the Losties to land at LAX and go about their lives never knowing about the island or about each other. This is the big no-no!!!  I am preparing myself for therapy if it has a super-lame ending.
  2. Please don’t decide later that you need to make LOST: The Movie. Just wrap it up on TV in a satisfying way.
  3. This season must answer completely the questions surrounding the history and significance of the Black Rock and I’m confident the Black Smoke will be explained.
  4. We better find out who the good guys are really and who the bad guys are, and if there is a team we should definitely be rooting for. I always said that if Ben turns out to be the good guy, I’m going to have a fit.
  5. Then there’s the mystery known as John Locke. Please, JJ, Damon, and Carlton, don’t leave us wondering if Locke had a purpose, really saw into the beautiful eye of the island, is permanently dead, and why and how he is involved in this struggle between Jacob and the Man in Black.
  6. I kinda get the idea that Christian Shephard might be a smoke-monster-manifestation of the Man in Black, but where is Claire and can Kate really take her back to raise Aaron? Speaking of Aaron, does he have a special purpose? And what’s up with all the babies not being able to be born?
  7. Who is Pierre Chang and why do his aliases reference candles i.e. Marvin Candle, Mark Wickmund,  Edgar Halliwax?
  8. OK, I have a very long list of questions that keeps getting longer the more I think about it.
  • For now, please refer back to number 1. I can’t afford therapy.

      Oh Evie-
what can I say? JJ just freakin rules. He does! It all started for me with “felicity,” the best show before LOST. Less suspenseful for sure, but loved it. (I’d let you borrow my DVDs… But then what would I do? netflix!) anyway. I agree. If Ben is good, I’m going to TOTALLY FREAK OUT & be really ticked for a really long time.
Have fun tonight at the premier party… Wish I could be there! You KNOW we will totally be watching it – can’t wait to hear your thoughts about it tomorrow.
      Love,

I am a proud Lost Junkie. My roommate and I watched every season up to #6 in a ridiculous amount of time and loved every second. My roommate, Craig, said to me after Season 6 Episode 1 premiered, “This is the only show I have ever watched where I feel like I absolutely NEED to know what is going to happen RIGHT NOW.” I guess we should have just waited and watched Season 6 on DVD… Oh well! Maybe it’ll be better this way with all of our built up tension and wondering…
      Love,Meg
      Ps:Sawyer
