Let’s jump right in to this week’s holidays with August 15, which heralds National Relaxation Day. Again, the term “national” should give you an indication of just how serious they are about this one.

I wonder if relaxation in the 21st century may sound easier than it actually is. It’s my experience that even when I’m relaxing, the wheels of my mind continue to spin. I suspect it’s fairly rare that I achieve a true state of relaxation.

Maybe this holiday deserves a little more merit than it receives. In fact, maybe it should be incorporated into a weekly schedule versus being a yearly event.

It’s worth a shot, right?

So I hope you’re rested, because next up is “The Meaning of “is” Day, which should prod you to put those brain cells to work. As you likely know, little can be as mind-rattling as trying to figure that one out. It is a true brainteaser. Well, it is… isn’t it? Or is it not? I give up.

On the 18th, we have Bad Poetry Day. Think back to elementary school when you were trying to impress some guy (or girl) and decided what better way to show your affection that through verse. Turns out you probably could have knocked them off their feet with a little ditty about the meaning of “is”.

Ugh.

Moving right along (it’s about time, Liz – can you speed things up a bit?) we have a southern hemisphere holiday on August 22 that I want you to practice here in the northern hemisphere. Because this holiday is coming here, too – but it’ll be a few months.

Can you take a stab at this one? OK, enough for the teasing. It’s Southern Hemisphere Hoodie Hoo Day! Yep, that day when at high noon, people pour out of their homes or schools or businesses and into the streets to throw their hands up in the air and say, “Hoodie Hoo!!”

What do you mean, “why would people do that?” – come on! It scares off the cold of winter! Remember, I told you this day is for the southern hemisphere, where it is winter right now.

Trust me, you’re gonna want to keep this holiday in mind, because those of us now experiencing summer will have our own day in February. I’m telling ya – practice now and spread the word. By then, we’ll need all the help we can get to ward off winter. And to think we can do this with two simple words: Hoodie Hoo!
