Get your party on: 7/26-8/1

palooza1Just when you thought you’d heard everything, I bring you Barbie in a Blender Day (no, I’m not making this up). Actually it’s a celebration of free speech that involves, well, Barbie. In a blender… among other things… Don’t take my word for it. See for yourself at FreeCulture:

Moving right along… When I was growing up, a neighborhood friend had a pair of stilts, and if memory serves, she was pretty capable when it came to getting around on them.

Although I never had a pair of stilts, I did get a unicycle one Christmas. And a pogo stick. Maybe we all had dreams of joining the circus back then. I bring this up because July 27 is Walk on Stilts Day.

It is with a bittersweet attitude that I announce I will not be participating in this one. I have no stilts. It’s probably just as well, as I’ve been known to trip over my own two feet without any help for a pair of wooden height extenders.

Lucky for me (it’s called sarcasm, people) this day is also Take Your Houseplant for a Walk Day.

In my world, there’s simply not justification for these two holidays, unless of course, you’re walking your houseplant while on stilts.

July 28 marks National Milk Chocolate Day. Who doesn’t like chocolate? Cover anything in chocolate and it becomes a culinary masterpiece (so they say). And, it’s good for you! Oh wait – that’s dark chocolate.

Regardless, I suspect you’ll need no help figuring out how to celebrate this one.

On July 29, we have a most interesting holiday to observe: Rain Day. Turns out that it’s rained 110 out of 134 years on this date, since the tallying began. The whole thing started when a gentleman in Waynesburg, PA, told the local druggist that it would rain on July 29, because that was his birthday – and it always rained on his birthday.

Seems the druggist couldn’t pass up the opportunity of betting, and began challenging others to join him. The druggist would win a hat if it rained, the other bettor would get a hat if it didn’t rain. Guess whose hat collection was the biggest…

Over the years, many a famous man and woman have made the bet – from Johnny Carson and Mario Lemieux to Fran Drescher and Donald Trump.

Check out the full schedule of Rain Day activities  here.

This week raps up with Cheesecake Day, which falls on July 30. As we’ve discovered with other holidays, here’s a day when, combined with National Milk Chocolate Day, can morph into an almost week-long celebration: chocolate-covered cheescake bits, chocolate chip cheesecake, you get the point. Sounds yummy… assuming you can get that vision of Barbie in a Blender out of your head…

Until next week, get your party on!

Enjoy your Coffee Break!
