Get your party on: 4/18-4/24

To say this week starts off slow is an understatement at best. National Hanging Out Day falls on April 19, followed by National Pot Smokers Day on the 20th. Note, if you will, that both of these are national holidays. Geez. And we wonder where our entitlement society came from…

OK, before I spiral up to my soapbox, we better move on.

If you can hold out until the end of the week, we have several holidays that all fall on April 24. Ordinarily, this next holiday wouldn’t have necessarily been on my list. But due to a recent family addition, I am compelled to celebrate Bulldogs are Beautiful Day.

With no further ado, meet Murray, my new “nephew.” He was born on Groundhog Day (thus the name Murray, in honor of the movie’s lead, Bill Murray). I tried to talk them into character names from the movie, like Phil or Pux or Ned to no avail. And unfortunately for me, Murray is so cute that I’ll resign myself to his name.

(See more on Murray this Monday on Liz’s next rant).

It’s also Eeyore’s Birthday Day. This is the perfect day to pull out your Winnie the Pooh books and remember the innocence in the days of Christopher Robin.

Sure, he may have been a downer most of the time in the Hundred Acre Wood, but Eeyore spit out some pretty profound reflections on life:

“To the uneducated, an A is just three sticks.”

The 24th also kicks off the two-day celebration of Interstate Mullet Toss Days. No, I’m not referring to the haircut by the same name. This mullet tossing is all about the oft-referred-to-as mystical fish. Held in Pensacola, FL, on the last full weekend of April, the mullet toss hosts thousands of participants who toss mullets across the state line from Florida into Alabama . No, the fish are not alive, and are subsequently fed to the birds, FYI.

According to  Barbara Burns, bartender at FloraBama Package & Lounge:
“Most people take the fish and roll it up like a baseball, tight as they can, crunch its little bones and everything else.”

That really is special, isn’t it? Sounds like an excuse to party, to me :-) When do we leave?

Oh the irony that the 24th is also Sense of Smell Day. If you’re anywhere near Pensacola, my guess is you’ll be hoping your sense of smell has taken a day off.

Until next week, get your party on!
