Get your party on: 3/14-3/20
My favorite potato chips would have to be the classic Lays with homemade French onion dip on the side. Grippo’s makes a mean barbecued chip that ranks right up there, though. Heck, I’m pretty partial to the homemade variety, too – probably because of the excessive salt and grease.
I mention this because March 14 is National Potato Chip Day.
Since the day falls on Sunday this year, it would be a great time to throw a party. Any real host or hostess will know exactly what to serve. Remember Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. on this day as well (CHEER!!), so be sure to set your clocks ahead an hour. Otherwise you may miss your own party.
Dumbstruck Day follows on March 15. Perhaps you’ll be dumbstruck that you were able to eat all those potato chips on the 14th.
I’m dumbstruck that this one is a holiday. Today is also Dad’s birthday, and my parents’ anniversary. I’m dumbstruck that they got married on Dad’s birthday.
Moving right along, March 17, of course, is St. Patrick’s Day – the day when, as a kid, we didn’t dare leave the house without wearing lots of green – shamrock green. I remember those who chose to wear some strange shade of green that wasn’t really green at all. As much as they tried, they never got away with it. If memory serves, they got extra pinches for being posers.
The menu for this day should include a big corned beef brisket with cabbage, while adding a few drops of green food coloring to whatever foods or beverages you may choose (think green eggs and ham). By all means, wear plenty of green to avoid being pinched. And be sure to check out Kate’s columns this week. I guarantee she’ll have some great ways to celebrate.
Next up is a holiday for all you science fiction pundits. You’ll be happy to know March 20 is Extraterrestrial Abductions Day (EAD) – likely the only day out of the year that someone’s enemies can disappear in an instant after green martians with 5-foot antennas haul them off in a flying saucer. Wouldn’t that be something…
In order for extraterrestrial abductions to take place, we’d have to give credence to UFOs. While I’ve never seen a UFO, history is replete with stories of strange sightings, alien abductions, and creatures from outer space maneuvering saucer-shaped ships at lightning fast speeds. All I know is those who believe in UFOs and the possibility of alien abduction do so with as much conviction as those who don’t believe. I’ll take this opportunity to remain neutral.
In an effort to ward off abductions (just in case), I’ll say Erin Go Bragh, and close with this classic Irish blessing:
May those that love us, love us.
And those that don’t love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn’t turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles
So we will know them by their limping.
Until next week, get your party on!

Liz is correct. I do LOVE St. Paddy’s Day. I’m working on some fun St. Patrick’s Day ideas for you which I’ll be running on Tues. and Wed. so come on back…
You forgot the March 14 is also National Pie day. 3.14 is the symbol for pie in math but everyone who celebrates pie day enjoys eating pie. Maybe there is a potato chip pie, that way you can celebrate both days at once.
Kelly, you are so right! In fact, I told my parents it was National Pie Day, tonight! But I neglected to tell my palooza people! So many holidays, so little time, haha. Great catch, though. And once again, you’ve proven that all our readers are far above par – and ALWAYS on the ball!!
