Get your party on 3/8 – 3/13

palooza1Sometimes it’s the little things in life that put a smile on my face,
an extra skip in my step, and generally make me feel like dancin’.
Today’s boogie comes courtesy of the beginning of Daylight Saving Time on March 8.
The name alone forces an immediately segue to point out the fact that there is no “s” at the end of “saving”. As my favorite newspaper
publisher points out twice a year, savings are what you keep in the
bank. Nevertheless, many people call it Daylight Savings Time. Now you know better.
Where was I? Oh, yes. DST – that time of year when the days get longer and the darkness of winter seems to dissipate. It seems to usher in warm weather, spring flowers, and outdoor activities in general, although I realize there’s probably no direct correlation. I’ve felt it coming for a few weeks, as the sun seems to linger in the sky a
little longer each evening. But this Sunday, it’ll make a full hour’s
leap forward (literally) overnight.
I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t mention the two obvious flaws
with the DST: First, we’ll be getting up in the dark – at least for a
while. Second, we’ll be staying up later.
Let me be clear. When I say “we”, what I really mean is my children.
Although it may not be of major consequence in the summer, it is quite detrimental to my (their) routine during the school year, requiring at least a week of walking around like zombies before we adjust to the time change.
Maybe our next holiday was created in response to my complaints of
waking in the dark and ruined routines – Get Over It Day is March 9.
As luck would have it, Napping Day is March 9 as well. This day always falls on the Monday after the return to DST. Clearly, the holiday was established to reinforce my zombie point. It’s also National Panic Day. Perhaps it goes without saying that if you miss that nap, you’re sure to go into a panic.
Dream 2009 is March 10. Why this holiday doesn’t fall on Napping Day
is beyond me. My guess is blatant oversight.
On Friday, everyone’s weekend should get off to a roaring start with
Earmuffs Day and Open an Umbrella Indoors Day. Only you can decide
whether to wear earmuffs while opening the umbrella.
Saturday is International Ask a Question Day.
Let me begin.
How did we ever survive without celebrating these bizarre holidays?
