Kate’s Escapades – Disgusting Worm Salad

Today’s post is courtesy of my crazy friend, Whitney.   I’ll admit I  come up with some kooky ideas from time to time, but next to her I’m an amateur.  She takes sick and disgusting to a whole new level with this Halloween “treat”.  This one is only for the truly warped and brave… Disgusting Worm Salad by Whitney Hancock These edible worms are a BIG hit for our Halloween Dinner. The first time I served these up the kids really freaked out. My daughter couldn’t even look at them at first, but after some coaxing and a little good natured teasing, she ate one. Then much too her surprise, she liked them. They take a little effort to make, but I think they are worth it. Plan to make these at least … Read entire article »

Thank heavens for little gray rainclouds – Kate’s Escapades

Middle of nowhere. Cracked radiator. 115 degrees. No cell service. Stupid dumb auto protection service that is not smarter than their stupid dumb computer program. Stupid. Dumb. Oh man, I really need a vacation from my vacation. More precisely, a vacation after my vacation. I should probably tell you that I spend nine looong months of the year impatiently waiting for the warm, delicious, relaxing, rejuvenating  too short three months of summer. No homework for the kids (or the mom, come on ladies, you know exactly what I mean), no strict bedtimes, the water park just calling our names, beckoning us to frolic and play. Without going on too much of a whining streak, let me just say that this was the summer that wasn’t, which quickly turned into the vacation that … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Not now! I’m burying a young girl.

I am away on vacation this week…woohoo!yeehaw! While I’m away I’ve left a few of my favorite summertime posts for you this week. Enjoy! ~Kate I have survived yet another family vacation. My family (minus one kid, plus 2 friends – for a grand total of 10 people) spent a glorious week in southern California. We had a blast spending 3 days at Disneyland, 2 days at the beach, and we even spent a day enlightening our minds at the Getty Museum. One of the highlights of every family vacation is adding to our family quote book. Perhaps this is where I should warn you that the collective sense of humor of my family is a little off center, bizarre, random, quirky…well, you get the point, we find odd things funny. A few … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Do you believe in the Vacation Fairy?

I am away on vacation this week…woohoo!yeehaw! While I’m away I’ve left a few of my favorite summertime posts for you this week. Enjoy! ~Kate Okay guys (and by guys, I don’t mean people in general, I actually mean guys, as in the gender laden with testosterone) this post is basically meant for you.  But if you fit within the estrogen half of the population, I think you might just want to read along for kicks. Guys, do you believe in the vacation fairy?  You must, right?  What other explanation could there possibly be for magically getting from point A, where you pick your vacation destination, to point B, actually arriving at said destination with everything you need for an enjoyable, stress-free trip? That’s all it takes, right?  Just pick a location, drive  … Read entire article »

Here Comes the Bride – Kate’s Escapades

Once in awhile, Right in the middle of an ordinary life, Love gives us a fairy tale. ~ Anonymous ~ My daughter got married this past Saturday. It was a wonderful, beautiful, amazing, emotional, exhausting day…and I wouldn’t trade one precious minute of it. She is the first of my seven children to get married (5 of the 7 are girls, yikes!!) and I’ve learned a thing or two over the past few months about what I will (or won’t) do the next time one of my kids decides to say “I do.” Here’s a big ‘Will Do Again’ that was a huge success at the reception… We rented a Photo Booth! That’s right, an honest to goodness photo booth, you know, the kind where you step inside, take a seat on the bench, pick out a few … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades –
How to make Harry Potter Wands

Unless you’ve been in solitary confinement in Azkaban for the past few months, you know that we are mere hours away from the release of  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. At my house we are counting down the minutes until the magical moment. (It’s no secret that I have some Harry Potter fanatics in my family. You can check out the party we had a few summers ago to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince here.) Anyway, we found a fabulous craft to keep ourselves occupied, and to help us while away the hours until the big event at 12:01 on Thursday night. (Unless of course you’re lucky enough to be me this week. I get to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part … Read entire article »

A little Dia for your day…

A little Dia for your day…

Here are a few videos for your entertainment this weekend. I’ve been following “The Voice” for the past few months, pulling for Dia Frampton (she’s friends with my oldest daughter from her Salt Lake days a few years ago). (Is Dia Frampton ‘The Voice’?) Javier Colon was crowned “The Voice”, but Dia came in a very close second. Here’s a favorite moment of mine, Dia Frampton and Miranda Lambert singing  Miranda’s hit, ‘The House That Built … Read entire article »

Best Dressed Bride Game – Kate’s Escapades

My daughter is getting married in less than two weeks and we are in full bridal mode at our house, meaning we pretty much eat, sleep and breathe all things wedding. This is my first go-round at being mother-of-the-bride (I’ve got 5 daughters) and I’m certainly learning some tips along the way that I’ll share with you over the coming weeks. We played a really fun and easy game at my daughter’s bridal shower a few months ago, which seemed to be a hit with the guests. We called it the Best Dressed Bride Game, but it could also be called the Toilet Paper Bridal Gown Game or Design Your Own Bridal Gown Game. Best Dressed Bride Game Supplies: toilet paper teams of shower guests Instructions: Divide the shower guests into teams of four or five and place … Read entire article »

Bountiful Baskets – Kate’s Escapades

I’m not sure how this happened, but apparently there’s a cool new shopping trend out here in Utah (and 14 other states) that seems to be all the rage, and I knew nothing about it! NOTHING! Not one thing! Nada! Thanks a lot, guys. I thought you were supposed to be taking care of me, you know, keeping me in the loop of all amazing new trends and finds. This cool new thing is called Bountiful Baskets . It’s a food co-op which uses it’s collective purchasing power to get fresh fruits and vegetables (and other assorted yummies) at great low prices, with the discounts being passed on to the co-op members (me…and soon hopefully you, too). I tried it out for my very first time this past Saturday morning in front of the Spanish Fork … Read entire article »

Bubble Fun – Kate’s Escapades

Here we are only a few weeks into the summer break, and already the kiddos are wandering aimlessly through the house feeling restless and bored. This simple and inexpensive idea is sure to keep the kids, or grandkids, busy for at least long enough so you can whip up a delicious treat, catch up on a DVRed episode of your favorite reality show, or maybe flip through that Entertainment Weekly that’s calling your name. Homemade Bubbles 4 cups Water 1 cup grease cutting dish Soap – (Palmolive, Ajax, Joy, Dawn…) 1/4 cup Light Corn Syrup (this takes the place of glycerine, which you probably don’t have) container – plastic tub, gallon jug Just mix all the ingredients together and store in container. Father’s Day Ideas – Kate’s Escapades

Father’s Day is just a few days away. If you’re looking to make the day special without spending a lot of money, here are a few great personalized ideas that are sure to please. The first comes from none other than Martha Stewart. (I usually try to avoid Miss Martha because she’s too perfect and complicated, however, this one is easy enough, even for me.) Pick up some of your dad’s favorite treats Print out these labels here and attach them to the treats Put them all in a cute basket   This next idea is what I’m doing this year. It is so cute I can’t even stand it! This idea comes from Kristine McKay at BlogHer. Click here for directions and to print the labels.   And last, but certainly not least, there’s a whole collection … Read entire article »

Is Dia Frampton The Voice? – Kate’s Escapades

I’ll be the first to admit that the show selection on telly during the summertime is mighty slim pickins’. If you’ve been here before, you probably know I am an admitted reality show addict. In the summer, though, I generally take a break from the TV nonsense by doing other more productive things, like sitting out on the front porch listening to crickets chirp while enjoying an ice cold Coke Zero. This summer, however… ‘Yay!’ for the fact that The Voice is on. Double ‘Yay! Yay!’ for the fact that the contestant that some are calling the frontrunner, Dia, is a Utah gal and friend of my oldest daughter, Megan. In this house, we’ve been fans of the music of sisters, Meg and Dia, for many years. On Tuesday’s live episode of The … Read entire article »

Guess the Celebrity Bride – Kate’s Escapades

After all these years of motherhood (we won’t go into exactly how many, but let’s just say it’s quite a few) I am about to take on a new title, ‘Mother-of-the-Bride.’  Pretty exciting. Pretty daunting. So this evening, four of my daughters and I are hosting a ‘Garden Tea Party’ bridal shower for the lucky bride-to-be. We’ve come up with a really fun game to play at the shower that’s a little different than the usual standard bridal shower party game. Guess the Celebrity Bride Game Supplies: Bridal Magazines Magazines with celebrity pictures (like People, US, Entertainment Weekly) Scrapbook paper Glue Scissors Paper and pencils for the bridal shower guests Directions: For me, making this game was ridiculous amounts of fun. When you take a look at the “Celebrity Brides” we came up with, I think you’ll see why. 1. Look through … Read entire article »

Kate’s Hunger Games Update

Jennifer Lawrence all made-over and Katniss-like <br /> Kate’s Hunger Games Update

(*Want to check out The Hunger Games movie reviews? Go HERE!) A few months back I wrote about the brouhaha over the casting of Jennifer Lawrence for the role of Katniss Everdeen in the movie adaptation of the literary bestseller, The Hunger Games. (If you missed it, take a look…Are you hungering for more Hunger Games?) Seems fans thought she was too old, too tall, too blonde, too glamorous… Well, here she is all made-over and Katniss-like.
