Kate’s Escapades – Prepare to be amazed

I’ll admit it. I’m a fan of the whole reality show genre. I’m always game for a good episode of Survivor or Project Runway (welcome back). Over the years though, I’ve kind of lost some of my excitement for the talent-type shows, America’s Got Talent being a prime example. The “talent” just seems so homogenized, and even a tad bit boring. How many singers, dancers, magicians can we watch before we venture off to a rerun of CSI, after all?

Seems that is not the case with the Ukraine version of  …

Kate’s Escapades – and the Oscar goes to…

I’ll admit it, I have an Oscar obsession (the awards show, not the lunch meat, although I have been known to enjoy an occasional 98% fat free bologna sandwich, however never on an actual Oscar night). Not once in the past 25 years have I missed the Academy Awards show. First and foremost, I am a huge fan of going to the movies, which just happens to work out nicely for me since I also get to review these movies for you. (Movie Reviews by Kate) But aside from that fact, I also love the Oscar hype, the pre shows, the pre-shows to the pre-shows, the after shows, and the the glitz and glam of it all…

Liz’s rant: Six tricks to look – and feel – younger

During a recent conversation with Kate, the subject turned to tummy tucks, face lifts and lipo-suction. And whether they could be achieved through exercise. Don’t ask me why.
I suppose it’s one thing to exercise for your health (I should probably walk more), but something quite different indeed to exercise for tone and a svelte, fat-free body – especially when you’re closer to 50 than 40-years-old. Especially when you’ve never really needed to worry about it before, but one day you look in the mirror and think: “EEK! What happened here?!?!”
As …

Kate’s Escapades – And the Oscar nomination goes to…

I am becoming giggly with anticipation for the live Oscar show this Sunday. So giggly, in fact, that I have decided to re-visit this post from last month announcing the Oscar nominations. This is your last chance, dear Coffee Break readers, to let your voice (er…click) be heard. Take my Oscar poll and let’s see how well we do with our predictions.

Liz’s rant: Fishdrops are fallin’ on my head

Remember the old saying, “It’s raining cats and dogs” ? I realize it is just that – a saying. Typically, if we say it’s raining cats and dogs, we’re simply referring to the fact that the rain is coming down hard – really hard.
So what would you say if I told you it was raining fish? No, seriously. What would you say? I suspect the conversation would go a little something like this.
“You lie.”
“No, I don’t. True story. Swear it.”
“Prove it.”
“OK.”
(This is my part, where I prove to you that …

Kate’s Escapades – I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells…and other things Dr. Seuss taught me about life.
“Kid, you’ll move mountains!  Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!” – Dr. Seuss

Today (March 2) is Dr. Seuss Day…a day celebrated in elementary schools all across this country. My own kids started off the day with Dad’s and Donuts before school. The object of this celebration is to see if  kids can drag their dads to school at the crack of dawn to eat a donut, and read …

Liz’s rant: Comments for the commentators

Like many of you, I’ve done my fair share of Winter Olympic Games watching over the past couple of weeks. While these games are far from perfection in many ways, there’s something about watching the various sports that inspires me to new heights.
Granted, I’ll never be a figure skater or curling champion. (Did any of you watch that sport? I kind of liked it – and my neighbors and I concluded it should be called the Swiffer sport.). But I think we could all come away with a few pointers. …

Kate’s Escapades – Give a Day. Get a Disney Day.

My family and I are ridiculous lovers of Disneyland. We make the trip to sunny southern California every other year for our family vacation, with the in between year vacations just serving a filler trips until we can once again return to the magical kingdom. We have a trip planned for this June, and to say we are already getting excited would be a bit of an understatement. In fact when daughter #2 was home from college visiting this past weekend, she led us in  a “How many days until …

Liz’s rant: Bring on the heat

After returning from our trip to Camp Shelby a couple of weeks ago, my car decided that since it is paid for, it can start bringing on the headaches.  (Isn’t it odd how that works?) And in keeping with the fact that we’re in the throws of winter, the heater fan quit working.
Obviously this wouldn’t be a problem in the middle of summer. Even if the A/C had gone out, I’d have been just as content to roll down the windows and let the fresh air in – not a …
