Kate’s Escapades –
How to make Harry Potter Wands

Unless you’ve been in solitary confinement in Azkaban for the past few months, you know that we are mere hours away from the release of  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. At my house we are counting down the minutes until the magical moment. (It’s no secret that I have some Harry Potter fanatics in my family. You can check out the party we had a few summers ago to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince here.) Anyway, we found a fabulous craft to keep ourselves occupied, and to help us while away the hours until the big event at 12:01 on Thursday night. (Unless of course you’re lucky enough to be me this week. I get to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part … Read entire article »

A little Dia for your day…

A little Dia for your day…

Here are a few videos for your entertainment this weekend. I’ve been following “The Voice” for the past few months, pulling for Dia Frampton (she’s friends with my oldest daughter from her Salt Lake days a few years ago). (Is Dia Frampton ‘The Voice’?) Javier Colon was crowned “The Voice”, but Dia came in a very close second. Here’s a favorite moment of mine, Dia Frampton and Miranda Lambert singing  Miranda’s hit, ‘The House That Built … Read entire article »

There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves…often moving around town in a herd of scooters. Is Dia Frampton The Voice? – Kate’s Escapades

I’ll be the first to admit that the show selection on telly during the summertime is mighty slim pickins’. If you’ve been here before, you probably know I am an admitted reality show addict. In the summer, though, I generally take a break from the TV nonsense by doing other more productive things, like sitting out on the front porch listening to crickets chirp while enjoying an ice cold Coke Zero. This summer, however… ‘Yay!’ for the fact that The Voice is on. Double ‘Yay! Yay!’ for the fact that the contestant that some are calling the frontrunner, Dia, is a Utah gal and friend of my oldest daughter, Megan. In this house, we’ve been fans of the music of sisters, Meg and Dia, for many years. On Tuesday’s live episode of The … Read entire article »

Reality Check – Kate’s Escapades

A week or so ago, I was scrolling through the playlist of my recorded TV shows and noticed something that kind of surprised me; about 60% of the shows on our list were reality shows. Then I started paying attention to what shows were on our 3 TVs during the next week. Truthfully, it’s like ‘Reality Central’ around here. Sure, there was a spattering here and there of ‘real’ TV shows, you know, the ones with actors and scripts, but for the most part, reality TV is pretty dang big at our house. I’m wondering what in the world this says about my family? Sure, we watch the typical popular reality shows that it seems all of America is tuned into: American Idol (my fav is Casey Abrams) , Dancing with the … Read entire article »

Are you hungering for more Hunger Games? –
Kate’s Escapades

(*Want to check out The Hunger Games movie reviews? Go HERE!) Katniss. If reading that word means nothing to you, then it’s time you high-tail it down to the book store or your local library. If you do recognize that name, then chances are you’re probably already a fan of the heroine of that name in the Hunger Games book series, written by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games series is the biggest thing since sliced bread, facebook, and the vampire take-over of the literary world.  (About that vampire thing, have you been to a bookstore in the last year, or so? There is now an entire section filled with vampire book series…an entire section.) I’ve read The Hunger Games (plus the other two books in the series, Catching Fire and Mockingjay) and they … Read entire article »

American Idol Top 13 – Kate’s Escapades

I’ve been biting my tongue for the past few weeks, just chomping at the bit trying to keep myself patient enough to refrain from writing an American Idol post until we get down to the actual final contestants.  I love this show. This season rocks with the addition of Steven Tyler ahhhhh!…                   and Miss Jenny from the block. (Not my block, mind you.  The people on my block wear cowboy boots…or camo…or more often than not, it’s cowboy boots AND camo, which is a stunning look, trust me. But someone’s block, like maybe Beyonce’s block where people have perfect hair, makeup and bodies. Yeah, THAT block.) This season, I love, LOVE, L.O.V.E. me some American Idol.  Without further ado, here are America’s Top 13 contestants (10 picks from the audience vote, … Read entire article »

Kate’s Oscar Wrap-Up

The 83rd Academy Awards were held Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011. I love the movies. I love the celebrities. I love the glitz and glam. Suffice it to say, Oscar night is one of my favorite nights of the year. I’ve got all of this year’s Oscar winners here for you, but first, a few of my own bests and worsts of the night. Most Heartfelt Acceptance Speech- Natalie Portman Best/Worst White Trash Moment - Melissa Leo (Proving  the actress didn’t have to stretch too far to play her role as boxing mother/manager, Alice Ward.) Most Awkward Moment - Any time Hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco were on stage I was soooo hoping for the best with these two “younger” hosts, but feared the worst. Anne tried too hard with her overly bubbly, hyper approach, which just became annoying … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Oscar Nominations 2011

Normally, I have to pry myself out of bed on cold middle of January winter mornings like today. The alarm clock screaming at me at 6:20 comes way too early. The house feels way too cold. The thought of prying grumpy tired kids from their warm cozy beds seems way too daunting.  That’s how it is on a normal Tuesday. Today, however, is no normal Tuesday. Today I popped myself right out of bed. I’m not sure, but I may have even had a smile on my face. Why?  It’s “Oscar Nomination Tuesday”, of course.  (See how I capitalized, italicized and quotation marked that phrase? That will give you some sort of clue about my Oscar fascination, which may be bordering on the unhealthy.) Don’t tell my husband, but I have a … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Sundance Film Festival 2011
(or what I like to call “Paparazzi time”)

(Sundance update: Kate Goes on an Adventure – Sundance Film Festival 2011) It’s Sundance Film Festival time once again. I should tell you right now that just typing that sentence made me giddy. If you’re not familiar with the Sundance Film Festival, here’s the gist of how it works. Independent filmmakers make low budget, innovative, and often quirky movies, without the backing of big studios. They premier these flicks  in the beautiful ski resort town of Park City, UT., (one of the all time coolest places I’ve ever been), in hopes of getting their films picked up by major studios. (Think…Precious, Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine, Reservoir Dogs, and Blair Witch Project, all recent Sundance movies). That’s the “official” purpose of the film festival. The reality of it, though, is that it’s a place … Read entire article »
