Kate’s Escapades – Not now! I’m burying a young girl.

I am away on vacation this week…woohoo!yeehaw! While I’m away I’ve left a few of my favorite summertime posts for you this week. Enjoy! ~Kate I have survived yet another family vacation. My family (minus one kid, plus 2 friends – for a grand total of 10 people) spent a glorious week in southern California. We had a blast spending 3 days at Disneyland, 2 days at the beach, and we even spent a day enlightening our minds at the Getty Museum. One of the highlights of every family vacation is adding to our family quote book. Perhaps this is where I should warn you that the collective sense of humor of my family is a little off center, bizarre, random, quirky…well, you get the point, we find odd things funny. A few … Read entire article »

Daughters, Marines and heat exhaustion – Liz’s rant

Last weekend, my daughter headed to North Carolina with her future in-laws (Lee and Cheryl) to welcome home our Marine, Adam, who has been serving in Afghanistan for more than seven months. There were months that went fairly quickly in retrospect, but some days seemed to take a year to get through. So I’m sure it comes as no surprise that Hannah was more than a little anxious to make the trip. As is typical with my daughter, she arrived in North Carolina making quite the grand entrance. I should’ve seen it coming I guess. The first sign that she was off to a rocky start came before she’d gotten out of the county: she’d forgotten the “welcome home” sign that she’d worked on so diligently. So she’d just have to … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Do you believe in the Vacation Fairy?

I am away on vacation this week…woohoo!yeehaw! While I’m away I’ve left a few of my favorite summertime posts for you this week. Enjoy! ~Kate Okay guys (and by guys, I don’t mean people in general, I actually mean guys, as in the gender laden with testosterone) this post is basically meant for you.  But if you fit within the estrogen half of the population, I think you might just want to read along for kicks. Guys, do you believe in the vacation fairy?  You must, right?  What other explanation could there possibly be for magically getting from point A, where you pick your vacation destination, to point B, actually arriving at said destination with everything you need for an enjoyable, stress-free trip? That’s all it takes, right?  Just pick a location, drive  … Read entire article »

The garden that didn’t grow – Liz’s rant

I am despondent. Totally, utterly despondent, I tell ya. Why? Because yesterday, I pulled up my three cucumber plants. Total summer yield: three cucumbers. Well, one was so large that I nicknamed it a zucchumber. I think it tipped the ruler at more than a foot in length. It doesn’t matter, though. I don’t grow them to break records. I grow them to pick when they’re approaching the perfect pickle cucumber size. Which is really tough to do when it doesn’t begin to ripen until it’s already a monster. So I’ll not even count the zucchumber. Meaning this gardening season has been an almost certain bust. No more visions of cucumber salads. No more visions of bread and butter and Kosher dill pickles to can. No more sliced cucumbers with salt, … Read entire article »

The feathers are flyin’ – Liz’s rant

Remember the last time you were packing 12 chickens around in your Dodge Neon and you needed to run into WalMart for something, so you thought to yourself, “Oh, I’m sure they’ll be fine if I barely crack the window. The heat index is only 117.” Me either. But apparently, someone with North Carolina plates in a central Kentucky WalMart who didn’t speak a lick of English was faced with just such a scenario this week. According to bystanders, the chickens were left in the car for about 30 minutes before police arrived on the scene and paged the car’s owner: “Attention WalMart shoppers. Will the customers with the dozen live chickens in their vehicle please come to the customer service desk?” … “Paging the chicken car people.” … The sounds of crickets chirping was broken … Read entire article »

Here Comes the Bride – Kate’s Escapades

Once in awhile, Right in the middle of an ordinary life, Love gives us a fairy tale. ~ Anonymous ~ My daughter got married this past Saturday. It was a wonderful, beautiful, amazing, emotional, exhausting day…and I wouldn’t trade one precious minute of it. She is the first of my seven children to get married (5 of the 7 are girls, yikes!!) and I’ve learned a thing or two over the past few months about what I will (or won’t) do the next time one of my kids decides to say “I do.” Here’s a big ‘Will Do Again’ that was a huge success at the reception… We rented a Photo Booth! That’s right, an honest to goodness photo booth, you know, the kind where you step inside, take a seat on the bench, pick out a few … Read entire article »

Breast Milk Baby – Liz’s rant

Is there anything quite as fulfilling as controversy to kick off the week? I think not. So let’s just skip right over the pleasantries and get right to it, shall we? Yesterday afternoon, while browsing the weekend’s tweets, I came across a new product, brought to my attention by Cool Mom Picks. The product? Breast Milk Baby. That’s right. Forget the days of the little plastic bottle with the milk that magically disappears. This baby doll doesn’t drink from a bottle. Oh, no. It’s a pseudo-breast-fed baby. Now, your little girls (or boys, I suppose) can don a halter with fake breast-o-flowers, pull the doll close,  watch the doll’s mouth move and listen to the sounds of a nursing baby. Before we move on, … Read entire article »

Twitter Dee, Twitter Dumb – Liz’s rant

It’s been more than two years since I opened my Twitter account, but only a few months that I’ve been actively using it. Notice I said actively, not successfully. I figured since everyone else is tweeting, I should be tweeting, too. It was time. Time to join the hoopla. Time to network like a pro. Time to embrace the latest (whatever) and greatest in the world of instantaneous communications. God help us. And is there really any other way to master anything other than to jump right in with both feet, hoping you can swim because you’re too lazy to throw on that life vest? I think not. Which could be an issue I need to re-address. Because I’m a tad bit prone to royal screw-ups, when left to my own … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades –
How to make Harry Potter Wands

Unless you’ve been in solitary confinement in Azkaban for the past few months, you know that we are mere hours away from the release of  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. At my house we are counting down the minutes until the magical moment. (It’s no secret that I have some Harry Potter fanatics in my family. You can check out the party we had a few summers ago to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince here.) Anyway, we found a fabulous craft to keep ourselves occupied, and to help us while away the hours until the big event at 12:01 on Thursday night. (Unless of course you’re lucky enough to be me this week. I get to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part … Read entire article »

Will you take a quarter? – Liz’s rant

Perhaps I should begin by telling you that Summer, Bert and I had a yard sale over the weekend, in case you hadn’t already figured that out by the headline. Because I’m betting if you’ve ever held a yard sale, or been to a yard sale, you’ve heard these words before. Heck, you may have even said these words. I’m also betting that if you’ve ever held a yard sale, you can pretty much figure out where this is going. I’m probably getting ahead of myself, so let’s start at the beginning. Well, not the real beginning, where you go through everything you’ve owned, closely examining each item and assigning it value a scale of 1-10 – one being something you’ve never used or haven’t used in many years, 10 being … Read entire article »

A little Dia for your day…

A little Dia for your day…

Here are a few videos for your entertainment this weekend. I’ve been following “The Voice” for the past few months, pulling for Dia Frampton (she’s friends with my oldest daughter from her Salt Lake days a few years ago). (Is Dia Frampton ‘The Voice’?) Javier Colon was crowned “The Voice”, but Dia came in a very close second. Here’s a favorite moment of mine, Dia Frampton and Miranda Lambert singing  Miranda’s hit, ‘The House That Built … Read entire article »

Best Dressed Bride Game – Kate’s Escapades

My daughter is getting married in less than two weeks and we are in full bridal mode at our house, meaning we pretty much eat, sleep and breathe all things wedding. This is my first go-round at being mother-of-the-bride (I’ve got 5 daughters) and I’m certainly learning some tips along the way that I’ll share with you over the coming weeks. We played a really fun and easy game at my daughter’s bridal shower a few months ago, which seemed to be a hit with the guests. We called it the Best Dressed Bride Game, but it could also be called the Toilet Paper Bridal Gown Game or Design Your Own Bridal Gown Game. Best Dressed Bride Game Supplies: toilet paper teams of shower guests Instructions: Divide the shower guests into teams of four or five and place … Read entire article »

Bodacious Buffalo Wing Sauce – Liz’s rave

Are any of you fans of QVC? (I know one reader who is… and you know who you are…) I am a huge fan. I especially like David Venable. He’s sort of like a big loveable Teddy bear – you can’t help but like him. At least I can’t. Anyway, I follow him on Twitter and have his app on my cell phone. Which is where his recipe comes in. The app features a list of his “app-only” recipes – many of which I’ve written down, hoping I’ll get around to fixing them. Last night, I was searching for something simple, relatively low in carbs and extremely high in taste. Enter his recipe for Oven Baked Boneless Chicken Tenders. I’m telling you it was OFF THE CHARTS GREAT! (Actually they tasted just … Read entire article »

There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves…often moving around town in a herd of scooters.
