Kate goes on an adventure to a bomb shelter
I spent this past Saturday in the middle of nowhere, traipsing through knee high weeds in the wide open fields of Clyde, Idaho. I am not joking when I say Clyde is smack dab in the middle of nowhere. Here are shots of all four directions at the exact spot my GPS lady (with her sophisticated English accent) told me I was “arriving at destination”, Clyde, Idaho.. I thought it was so funny I just … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Bouncin’ around
Who knew there were a bazillion and three uses for Bounce dryer sheets? Not me. Now I did know of a few – like sticking one in a drawer or closet to keep it smelling fresh. But I mean beyond the obvious. So I thought I’d rant about the other uses for Bounce – as in the uses I didn’t know about. So without further ado… Take the odor out of books and photo albums that … Read entire article »

You’d think I’d have some grand celebratory idea for Sept. 13 since it is International Chocolate Day, but frankly I’m a little sick of all these chocolate-themed holidays. Yes, I realize there’s really not much else to celebrate this week, but I don’t care. You wanna celebrate International Chocolate Day? Be my guest. I’ll be doing my nails. Sept. 15 is Felt Hat Day. When I think felt hats, I think roaring ’20s. Perhaps we could all make a nice felt hat to sport today? Here are a couple of old ads to get you in the mood. We round out this week, with what I suspect could amount to a three-day drunken stupor for some, with Beer Days, celebrated Sept. 16-18. If you should decide to imbibe, I’m sure it goes without saying: … Read entire article »

Kate’s Recipe of the week – Cake Ball Pops
This week’s recipe is one of my all-time favorites – Cake Ball Pops. They’re little balls of cake mixed with frosting and covered with chocolate and sprinkles. What’s not to love?! They’re kind of like cake, kind of like candy, and super decadent and delicious. Sure, making Cake Ball Pops will take a tad bit longer than the typical recipes I feature, but take my word for it, they are worth the extra effort! Ingredients: Cake mix Tub of frosting Chocolate to melt Sucker sticks Prepare the cake mix according to package directions using any of the recommended pan sizes. When cake is done, crumble while warm into a large bowl. Stir in the frosting until well blended. Use a melon baller or small scoop or your hands to form balls of the chocolate cake mixture. Insert sucker sticks into … Read entire article »
Liz’s rant: Rights versus what’s right
Let me begin this by saying I can’t imagine that any American could be more outraged than myself where the terror of Sept. 11, 2001 is concerned. (Although I suspect many of you share an equal amount of outrage.) I am still angry and devastated over the events that transpired nine years ago. But I remember thinking as that day played out, we’d soon forget as a nation. And I believe many have. Unless you’ve been on another planet, you also know that there are plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero. That it is their right to build said mosque is not in question. Freedom of religion sits squarely our Constitution, Amendment 1. (For the purposes of my rant, we won’t get into the fact that there are other laws … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Once upon a mattress
Well, here we are – Labor Day 2010. The day we bid a bittersweet buh-bye to summer and welcome the cooler days of fall. I’ll make it quick, since I’m heading to the parents for lunch, but thought I’d point out a few tidbits about a holiday that I suspect most of the country views as nothing more than a way to get a long weekend. Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September since 1894, when the holiday became official under the pen of President Grover Cleveland. Of the odd things associated with this day, I’ll first bring up that unwritten rule (at least I think it’s unwritten): No white clothing from now until Memorial Day. Seriously, who dreamed that one up? I have some winter white pants, thank … Read entire article »

In keeping with our first holiday for the week, I have half a mind not to post this until tomorrow or beyond, as Sept. 6 is Fight Procrastination Day, and I feel like going against the tide on this one. I figured I better be timely about this holiday, though, for any of you who should be so inclined to actually put the practice of fighting procrastination to work. As for me, I’ll do it later. Jumping into Sept. 7, this is the date we are called on to celebrate Neither Rain Nor Snow Day. While this one does mark the 1914 opening of the New York Postal Service, the words inscribed on said building are not the motto of the United States Postal Service. That figures. It’s actually more akin (very closely … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: The road trip
As I mentioned Monday, I took a little adventure last week, heading off to the nation’s capitol for four days. I wasn’t alone in my venture – let’s just call it 3 1/2 men and me. What was I thinking? Just so we all know where I stand, my idea of travel involves stopping only for gas and potty breaks when absolutely necessary, eating in the car and holding the pedal to the metal. I don’t screw around because I want to get there. Our journey began at Cracker Barrel, 7 a.m. Thursday. Except that Colton and I were the only ones there. The men were running late – and it was almost 9 a.m. before we got on the road. An hour later, we stopped to get a prescription filled. Are you … Read entire article »
