Get your party on: 7/11-7/17

Ever wonder how the dictionary defines the term “geek”?  Looking at the first definition according to Merriam-Webster,  a geek is “a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake”. If that’s true, I’ve been misusing the term for years. Moving through the other definitions, the word is also defined as an intelligent-type/not-well liked (enter black square-framed glasses taped in the middle.) Last in the definitions, there’s the expert or enthusiast in a specific field (computer geek, for example). I mention this because July 13  is Embrace Your Geekness Day. While biting off the heads of live chickens and snakes is hardly up my alley, I propose we celebrate today by buying a pair of black-framed, thick plastic …

Liz’s rant: The ants go marching

Earlier this summer, a line-up of small, brown-black ants paid a visit to my kitchen counters, which really irritated me to no end. After all, ants have their place in the world – and that place is outside, thank you. Anywho, on my discovery, I grabbed the cinnamon – the same substance I’d used last year with  one-application results: sprinkle and forget. It was my equivalent of swatting a fly with a flyswatter. One direct hit and it’s gone. Needless to say, I was quite confident that this one-stop treatment would once again work in a matter of two or three days, and I could get on with finding other reasons to stay out of the kitchen.  I was right – at least for about  three weeks. Not the first ant … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Sellers beware

Is there anything worse than getting very attached to your next door neighbors only to see a “for sale” sign go up in their yard? Ok, I guess there are worse fates… but in my opinion, this one is pretty bad. For more than two years, my family has developed a great friendship with this family of five, and seeing them go, although their house is yet to be sold, will chalk up as one of the sadder moments I’ve experienced. And I dread it like the plague already. Oh, sure. I’ve tried guilt. I’ve tried bribery. I’ve pulled out (almost) all the stops attempting to convince them that moving is in the best interest of no one. But they seem H-E-double hockey-sticks bent on moving. Something about needing more room, three … Read entire article »

Get your party on: 7/4-7/10

I trust you’re all out and about, celebrating freedom on this July 4. Let the fireworks begin! Meanwhile, let’s get to some of this week’s other holidays. Oh, the irony with these first two. Chocolate Day and Tell the Truth Day both happen to fall on July 7. I trust you see the problem with this.  If it’s Chocolate Day, it only stands to reason that we should (wait for it…) eat chocolate. But here’s the caveat: you’ll have to fess up as to just how much chocolate melts in your mouth. Otherwise, you will be in direct contradiction with this day’s other holiday. I really don’t see any way around this one, people. So my suggestion is quite simple: eat chocolate in moderation, today. Next up, get ready for quite a bizarre piece … Read entire article »
