Liz’s rant: I’m not playing anymore

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (and restaurant) is arguably my favorite place in the world for breakfast. Not only is the home cooking hard to beat – they put hashbrown casserole on the map, afterall – there’s always plenty to do. For those of you not familiar with this eatery,  it’s a restaurant and old-time store, featuring movies, candies, and other trinkets from the past as well as toys, garden decor, candles, quilts, clothing… the list goes on and on. Talk about up-selling… It’s a landmark in its own right that dots the interstates of the southeast U.S. And it’s the only restaurant I know of that has a peg game on every table. For anyone not familiar with the peg game, the board is a wooden triangle with 15 holes, and … Read entire article »

Get your party on: 6/13-6/19

Let’s be honest, here. It’ll be another week or so before we have a large line-up of holidays that make me feel like dancing. Meanwhile, here are a few good ones to celebrate mid-June. June 16 ushers in Bloomsday. At first glance, you’re probably thinking this one has something to do with flowers and summertime and all things nature. Nope. This day is named in honor of a character (from a novel) whose last name was Leopold Bloom. (You may have heard of the book: Ulysses, by James Joyce.) Here’s a brief summary: The novel recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin—June 16, 1904—as an ordinary Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses. Streets, shops, pubs, churches, bridges—something of Dublin … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: You go, girl

I know what you must be wondering… Did Liz turn into a crazed feminist or something? I’ll put your mind immediately at ease. Are pigs flying? Did the sky fall? Have you lost your mind? No, Kate… I… am still the same ol’  snippy, cynical, always-on-the-cutting-edge self. In fact, I’d planned to address Kate’s eye exam (which is still fair game for another time) and echo her sentiments times 1,000. But when I’m standing in a store and say aloud to the sales clerks that I feel a rant coming on as I stare at a product, all bets are off. So, let’s talk about today’s find. Product name? GoGirl. Product’s motto? Don’t take life sitting down. Intriguing, isn’t it? Suffice to say I seriously doubt the name and motto are anything … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Which is better, 1 or 2?

Every single time I go in to the eye doctor’s office to refill my contact prescription, I get basically the same response from the lady at the front desk. “I’m sorry Kate, it seems your prescription expired 2 months ago.” Or… “Oh, it looks like your due for an exam.Your prescription expired 3 weeks ago.” Or… “Too bad you didn’t find a closer parking spot, Kate. Your prescription expired 43 seconds ago!” Every. Single. Time. And thus the tone is set for the remainder of the visit. Here are the reasons why I really, REALLY don’t like going to the eye doctor’s office (which I have affectionately nicknamed the optometry chamber of tortures). The visit starts off with a lie. They lead you to a dark room and have you sit in a chair and tell you to place … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Look out for the Ogres!

As most of you are probably – and, painfully – aware, the Shrek series of drinking glasses, offered by the often-featured-here McDonald’s fast food chain, have been voluntarily recalled. I doubt I’m alone in the reality that my kids made them the go-to drinking glasses a few weeks ago, often bickering over who gets Puss-n-Boots and who gets Donkey. The fact that I’ve stolen the Donkey glass on a few occasions for my own personal use probably doesn’t help matters, but that’s neither here nor there, is it? Anywho, the glasses are said to contain an “unsafe” level of cadmium, (think Miley Cyrus jewelry, also recalled recently) which could lead to God knows what sort of illness, deformation and general catastrophe. Translation: the sky is falling. Run, Forrest, Run. Seems all-too par … Read entire article »

Get your party on: 6/6-6/12

Welcome to another week of wacky and weird holidays (where as you know, some are much more weird than wacky).Let’s get things going with June 6 – a date that I’m sure Kate already observes. It’s Drive-In Movie Day. While the drive-in movie joints still exist, they’re few and far between these days, which is really too bad. While I haven’t been to a drive-in in years, I still remember the ambiance of sitting in your car to watch a new release on the giant screen, occasionally getting out to go to the concession stand, which I always wanted to park close to. Movies without popcorn should be illegal. Anywho, I don’t know what the chances are that there’s a drive-in movie threatre near you. Just sayin’ that if there … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – National Doughnut Day

If you’ve come to Coffee Break today looking for my weekly movie review…surprise! No review today. That’s because the  big movie opening this weekend is “Killers”, and the folks in charge at Lionsgate have decided not to allow advance screenings for critics. They would prefer to let the audience decide if they like the movie and then let the word spread on Twitter and Facebook. Imagine that! “We want to capitalize on the revolution in social media by letting audiences and critics define this film concurrently,” Lionsgate said in a statement late Wednesday. “In today’s socially connected marketplace, we all have the ability to share feedback instantly around the world. In keeping with this spirit, Lionsgate and the filmmakers want to give the opportunity to moviegoing audiences and critics alike to … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: When candy is its own food group

As I’ve said on numerous occasions in the past, our money-hungry, spend-more-than-you-have government would soon begin taxing things that are likely to take you by surprise. For all you nay-sayers out there, the tax-you-blind craziness is already well under way. But with a caveat I find especially amusing. It seems as if several states, who decided to bridge their budget deficit with candy and soda taxes have run into a sticky situation, if you will (think taffy or melty, gooey caramel). Apparently, there’s some question as to what candy is actually candy and what candy is, well, not. Seems similar to the now-infamous “depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is,” debacle. Here are a few cases in point, beginning with the state of Washington, where a new candy tax has taken effect. … Read entire article »
