Get your party on: 2/14-2/20
By now, most of you have probably come to the realization that there is never a dull moment where holidays and celebrations are concerned. This week is no exception. So put down that heart-shaped box of chocolates and let’s get to it. February 17 is Champion Crab Race Day - a holiday right up my alley. I love crabs – king crab, snow crab, blue crab, even imitation crab. I’ve had pet hermit crabs. And sometimes, I act like a crab. In Oregon, the big day is celebrated just as the holiday’s name implies. Six contestants at a times (of the human persuasion) ante up $1 to $4. Six Dungeness crabs are pulled from a tank and assigned a lane on the race track, angled at 35 degrees to encourage the crabs to … Read entire article »

Recipe of the Week – Cheater Kentucky Hot Browns
This week’s recipe of the week is… Kentucky Hot Browns. Being two Kentucky girls, we think it’s high time we share this good old southern dish with the rest of the world. And true in Liz and Kate form, of course we had to figure out a cheater way to keep the same yummy flavor, while cutting the time and effort spent in the kitchen. Right about now most of you may be saying, “What in the world is a Hot Brown?” Here’s a brief history of the origins of this delicious dish. In the 1920′s, The Brown Hotel (in Louisville) drew over 1,200 guests each evening for its dinner dance. In the wee hours of the morning, the guests would grow tired of dancing and retire to the restaurant for a bite … Read entire article »
This Week on the Bachelor – Episode 6
This week on the Bachelor – episode 6 (For other Bachelor episode recaps…click here!) The Bachelor roller coaster ride continued this week with more shocking and surprising developments. It’s down to four girls (Gia, Ali, Tenley, and Vienna) and they all get to take Jake to their hometowns for for family time. Each tried to secure her place in Jake’s heart. m m It’s hometown date time, and first off Jake heads to New York City, hometown of Gia. They shared a romantic boat ride where Gia told Jake about her past bad luck with finding a good man. Jake meets her mom and brother (who has a luke warm impression of Jake), and the mom seems a bit like a psycho with the whole tarot card reading at the end. m m fvfm Next up is the … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Choose your color carefully
In honor of stupid Cupid, I thought we’d have a little fun with flowers, today. Plus which, Kate outdid herself with the personalized fortune cookies, so I’m trying to save face, here. As you probably know, Valentine’s Day is a huge boon for florists, with the male of the species ordering blooming love for their lovers. In fact, 50 million flowers are given worldwide on this date. But there are a few rules of the road when it comes to giving flowers – especially when that flower is a rose. Personally, I’m a tulip girl, but I’m sure there are many of you out there intent on buying the love of your life a dozen roses. That said, let’s make sure you get the right color, okay? Red, of course, is … Read entire article »

Get your party on: 2/7 – 2/13
Well, I’m back, Coffee Breakers! And so are the holidays, so without further ado, we’re gonna pretend like there aren’t many holidays on Feb. 7 (and the truth is, the biggie is the Super Bowl and Man Day. Man Day could theoretically open up a can of worms, so I think it’s best this way…) But Feb. 8 is a big day for anyone struggling financially. You think I’m kidding? HA! Get ready for Laugh and Get Rich Day. Beecause apparently, yes – it’s that simple. I think this one probably works on quality of laughter. A little laugh or chuckle equals 10 bucks, tops. A good laugh? Heck, that one may be worth $50. But a hearty belly laugh is probably worth a C-note or better, depending on duration and … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: The King Cake
Here we are – T-minus 3 days until Mardi Gras, or a day Kate and I like to call Fat Tuesday. So I bring you one of the traditions associated with this festival of pancakes (yes, yes, I know – that’s really not what it’s about). The King Cake (also known as the King’s Cake or Three Kings’ Cake) is typically an oval-shaped pastry-type cake, iced with a glaze and sprinkled with the colors of Mardi Gra – primarily purple and gold. But this is Mardi Gras we’re talking about here, so I’m sure any color scheme would work. You can read all about the history of the cake here. But for my intents and purposes, here’s the bottom line: There’s a plastic baby Jesus that’s typically hidden within this annually-eaten desert. … Read entire article »

LOST Recap- LA X part 2 (2/2/10) by Evie
2/2/10 This week on LOST – LA X Part II by Evie (Want to read about LOST – LA X Part 1? Click here!) More new characters are introduced. New characters usually mean more questions, but I think their purpose will be to explain the island’s distant past including Jacob, the Man in Black/Smoke Monster (I hope we learn his real name), Richard/Ricardus, and the Black Rock. This episode begins with Sawyer and Miles burying Juliet. Hurley, Jack, Kate, Jin, and stretcher-bound Sayid are entering the temple through the underground Smokey entrance where they find Montand’s remains. Kate does the logical thing and finds matches in the bag belonging to Montand who lost his arm back in the 1980’s. Hurley sees a book by Søren Kierkegaard; I can’t make out the name of the … Read entire article »

LOST Recap – LA X part 1 (2/2/10) by Evie
2/2/10 This week on LOST – LA X Part I by Evie Wow! The producers of LOST did it again. In the first few minutes of the beginning of “LA X part I”, I found myself saying, “Whaaat?!”. Apparently Juliet was successful in detonating Jughead and the white light transitioned to clouds out the small window of Oceanic flight 815, at least I assume it was Oceanic flight 815. Jack is staring out the window and when he turns around his facial expression is one of confusion. Jack and Rose have the same conversation (well almost the same) as the beginning of the series way back in Season 1. You remember Season 1, right? When we thought we were simply watching a show about the unfortunate survivors of a plane that crashed … Read entire article »

Recipe of the week – Cheater Fish Tacos
This week, we’re featuring another recipe from Coffee Break reader Susan Stephens. Maybe you’ve seen the announcement boards at local seafood restaurants, featuring fish tacos. As Susan has discovered, you don’t have to dine out to enjoy this meal – nor do you have to spend hours slaving over a hot stove. Kate decided to give this cheater recipe a try (and to take some pics) and gives it a big thumbs up! So without further delay, we present: Cheater Fish Tacos m m Cheater Fish Tacos 20 frozen fish sticks 1 jar red or green salsa (I like green salsa the best for this) 1 (8-oz.) container sour cream 10 corn tortillas 1 bag coleslaw mix (the kind with red and green cabbage and carrots) 2 or 3 green onions or about ½ of a red onion 1 lime Bake the fish sticks … Read entire article »

This week on the Bachelor – Episode 5
Read recaps of all the Bachelor episodes This week on the Bachelor – Episode 5 Five girls remain and Jake and the girls spend some time in San Francisco. The episode begins with a one on one date with Tenley, who Jake really seams to like. They site see, ride in a trolley and open fortune cookies which say “Kiss Me” which they do. OK…am I the only one who saw the clip weeks ago where Tenley told Jake she was pregnant. I think that was 2 episodes ago. What is up with that? And now she is in the final four!? Next comes a two on one date with Vienna and Gia. Vienna of course tries to monopolize the time, but Jake takes Gia off alone and they spend some time talking … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Confessions of a LOST addict
Today is a big day. As in A…BIG…DAY! Just ask any LOST fan. It’s the day we have been waiting for nearly 9 months. Season 6 of LOST premiers tonight, people. I came into the strange world of LOST very late in the game. In fact, I have never watched a new episode on TV with the rest of the world. (And because of that, I now have a wonderful relationship with Netflix.) I am proud to say that I am all caught up…5 entire seasons worth, and tonight I will be watching LOST with the rest of the crazies out there in the world. m Speaking of LOST crazies, I’d like to introduce to you Evie, a true LOST addict. She will be joining us on Coffee Break with Liz and Kate … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: The sink is shiny. I hope you’re happy.
As you may know, Kate did a piece a couple of weeks ago, where she’d found the perfect way to clean house, etc. Unfortunately, I took the bait, followed the link, and decided that I, too, could make my house everything I wanted it to be. Forget that she was getting massive emails to achieve this perfection. I’d just delete them. But somewhere along the way, I got sucked in to the wicked world of shiny sinks. Don’t misunderstand me – on its face, it isn’t that bad. You shine your sink every night, you wake up to a shiny sink, and all is right with the world. You declutter little by little and before you know it, your house is a FLY house, if you will. Now the original Flylady will insist … Read entire article »

LOST Recap – 6.3 “What Kate Does” – by Evie
February 12th, 2010 | Add a Comment
What Kate Does – Lost 6.3 by Evie This Kate-centric episode shows her at the airport hijacking a cab occupied by Claire. Arzt is crossing the sidewalk and having a problem with his luggage so the cab driver stops for a moment. Kate looks out the window and sees Jack talking on his cell phone. She looks at him like she recognizes him but can’t quite place who he is. Not far from the airport, the cab driver jumps out of the cab, so Kate gets into the driver’s seat and kicks Claire out without her purse or suitcase. Kate finds a garage and the attendant helps her remove the handcuffs. I was expecting the man to be someone we’d seen in the past. It seems like the people our Losties meet … Read entire article »
