Get your party on: 2/28-3/6

Remember when you were little and you ventured into your grandparents’ attic to look for treasures? There was something quite comforting about seeing all the old quilts and dishes and knickknacks. I could’ve stayed up there for hours on end, sifting through all that old stuff. I’m not sure that’s what the originators of this holiday had in mind, but nevertheless, March 2 is Old Stuff Day – the perfect time to get in your grandparents’, parents’ or even your own attic and root through old stuff. I should probably point out that FlyLady would insist on getting rid of the clutter while you’re at it. And I suspect she’d back up the need to declutter all that old stuff with one sentence: I want you to be happy. As luck would have … Read entire article »

Recipe of the week – Cheater Bacon Focaccia

It’s Friday, so that means it’s once again cheater recipe time. So what’s a “Cheater” recipe?  It’s a way to end up with a delicious home cooked meal, side dish or dessert without spending lots of  time to get there. Today’s recipe… Cheater Bacon Focaccia Ingredients: 1 can (11 oz.) refrigerated breadstick dough (12 breadsticks) 10 slices cooked bacon 1 egg, beaten 2 slices chopped cooked bacon Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375°F.  Unroll dough and separate into 12 strips.  Starting at center of ungreased cookie sheet, coil bacon with dough strips into a loose spiral.  As more strips and bacon are added to the coil, pinch dough ends together and continue coiling until all 12 strips are added. 2. Drizzle beaten egg over dough filling in crevices.  Sprinkle chopped bacon on top. 3. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes … Read entire article »

Shutter Island – Movie Review by Kate

Shutter Island – Movie Reviews by Kate Reel Reviews for real people Rating: R for disturbing violent content language and some nudity Genre: Drama Starring: Leonardo Di Caprio, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Mark Ruffalo Director: Martin Scorsese Plot: From Oscar®-winning director Martin Scorsese, “Shutter Island” is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane. –© Paramount Running Time: 2:18 Kate says – 3 1/2 stars “Shutter Island is so much more than I expected it to be. Kate’s Escapades – Give a Day. Get a Disney Day.

My family and I are ridiculous lovers of Disneyland. We make the trip to sunny southern California every other year for our family vacation, with the in between year vacations just serving a filler trips until we can once again return to the magical kingdom. We have a trip planned for this June, and to say we are already getting excited would be a bit of an understatement. In fact when daughter #2 was home from college visiting this past weekend, she led us in  a “How many days until Disneyland?” paper chain making activity. m m m m m m m Just imagine our excitement when we found out about Disney’s Give a Day/Get a Day volunteer program this year. All you have to do is give a day of service through a participating organization, and you … Read entire article »

LOST – 6.4 “The Substitute” recap by Evie

LOST Recap for Episode 6.4 “The Substitute” Locke and Helen This episode begins with John Locke arriving at his home in suburban LA. The wheel-chair lift on the van gives out half way down and he rolls himself onto the grass, but unfortunately lands on his face. Knowing he had just flown back from Australia where he was not allowed to go on his walk-about, and that the airline has just lost his luggage, I was prepared for Locke to be extra grouchy. Especially when the sprinklers came on.  But he actually began to chuckle. Good thing Helen was there. Yay! Helen! She ran out of the house and rescued John from the shower he was getting outside….transition to John soaking in the bathtub….where he’s looking at fabric samples while overhearing Helen talking … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Have potty seat, will travel

I will be the first to admit that when a perfectly sane, logical, proper, and clear thinking woman becomes a mom, all previous rules and social mores practiced in the pre-child life, go flying out the window. (Kind of like what happens to those Happy Meal toys kids just love to dangle out the windows of the car. You know, when the mom is screaming, “Don’t hang that out the window.  You’re gonna drop it and it’s  gonna fly out the window! I am NOT turning around to pick it up if you drop it!” And then the kid always drops it, and then the mom almost always turns around and goes to get it anyway. Kind of like that.) Moms do some crazy stuff. Stuff that, in retrospect, we can’t believe … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know – how to energize in two minutes

Betcha didn’t know…how to energize in two minutes. Here’s a quick and easy way to catch your second wind in two minutes. Simply rub each fingertip for about 15 seconds. That stimulates acupressure points that boost flow, which jumpstarts your energy level by sending extra oxygen to your brain. ~Woman’s World … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…the power of looking at green

Betcha didn’t know – the power of looking at green. When you are feeling tired, just take a look at something bright green. Receptors in the eye are sensitive to the color’s wave-length, stimulating the brain and relaxing the eye strain that causes tiredness. ~Woman’s World … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Bring on the heat

After returning from our trip to Camp Shelby a couple of weeks ago, my car decided that since it is paid for, it can start bringing on the headaches.  (Isn’t it odd how that works?) And in keeping with the fact that we’re in the throws of winter, the heater fan quit working. Obviously this wouldn’t be a problem in the middle of summer. Even if the A/C had gone out, I’d have been just as content to roll down the windows and let the fresh air in – not a practice I’m willing to implement in 20-degree weather. You’d think the fact that it was miserably cold – especially when Colton and I headed out the door for school in the mornings – would have been enough. Worse though, was this … Read entire article »

Get your party on: 2/21-2/27

Wow! Are we having fun yet? I trust all of you did your party to ward off winter yesterday, hoodie-hooin’ everywhere you went. The weather will be the judge of how well you performed, of course. For the love of Mike, I sure hope you did well. I say that because Feb. 22 is For the Love of Mike Day. Please don’t ask who Mike is. The best I can do is tell you of a 1927 movie by the same name. Directed by Frank Capra, the movie told the story of three men who adopted an orphan and financed his education. The kid attends Yale and almost falls in with the wrong crowd. Alas, he is saved by the love of a co-ed. All that, and I still have no idea … Read entire article »

LOST – follow up to “What Kate Does” by Evie

LOST   follow up to last week’s episode. First of all, my apologies to those of you who genuinely enjoyed the last episode, What Kate Does. Perhaps I was too harsh in my judgment of not enough answers. Erika at Long Live Locke.com reminded me that we fell in love with LOST way back when there wasn’t a lot of action. Shannon was sunbathing, Jack was going through suit cases looking for supplies, Charlie was playing his guitar. On the other hand there wasn’t a whole lot of crazy mystery either that we were desperate to have answered. While I was visiting LLL I read a couple of interesting things I missed so I thought I’d share. When Kate was going through Claire’s bag at the garage after being de-handcuffed, she saw the stuffed … Read entire article »

Recipe of the week:
Cheater 2-Ingredient Muffins

Based solely on the name of this week’s recipe, we’re guessing that some of you might be a bit cynical, wondering how in the world a 2-ingredient muffin can be achieved without breaking every tooth you have. But according to our go-to cheater recipe provider Susan Stephens, not only are 2-ingredient muffins possible, they’re quite tasty as well.  If Susan isn’t careful, she might find herself in a full-time cheater recipe finder position. “Yes, this (recipe) does work!” Susan said. “These are very moist muffins. I thought they were even better the next day.” She suggests serving the muffins warm with reduced fat cream cheese. Cheater 2-Ingredient Pumpkin Muffins The 2 ingredients are… 1 box spice cake mix 1 (15-oz.) can solid pack pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) m m Optional extra ingredients… ½ cup chopped nuts ½ cup dried … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Prediction – Next Chinese New Year dinner will be at a Mexican restaurant

I did my best to get into the spirit of Cupid, this year. So much so that I took Kate’s great fortune cookie gift and made some of my own for the kids and my parents. Even I must admit they turned out great, and, since yesterday was not only Valentine’s Day but also the Chinese New Year, I was able to bring the flavor, if you will, of both holidays together. It seemed only natural to agree to Chinese when Mom and Dad extended the invitation for dinner. They’d even suggested a Mexican restaurant if we wanted to do that, but as I told Mom, it just didn’t seem right to have Mexican on the Chinese New Year. Unfortunately for us, we’d failed to realize that Chinese restaurants tend to do … Read entire article »
