Get your party on: 1/31-2/6

Well, here it is – the week we’ve all been waiting for – the week to think clouds! Because as you probably know, ol’ Punxsutawny Phil will waddle out of his hole in the ground on Feb. 2 to single-handedly decide whether or not we’ll have six more weeks of winter. Groundhog Day has been around for more than a century. Who knew a groundhog could live to be that old – or be this famous? Take a look at a few of Phil’s other antics, courtesy of The Official Website of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club: During Prohibition, Phil threatened to impose 60 weeks of winter on the community if he wasn’t allowed a drink. In 1981 Phil wore a yellow ribbon in honor of the American hostages in Iran. Phil traveled to Washington … Read entire article »

Recipe of the week:
Cheater Chocolate Apple Bake

Another Friday is upon us, and you probably know by now that it means it’s time for another cheater recipe – this week, courtesy of moi, Liz. So without further ado, let’s get to this week’s recipe: Cheater Chocolate Apple Bake Ingredients: Apples  (one per person) Snicker bars (four snack-size bars per person) Dash of cinnamon Ice cream of your choice Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and grease a small casserole dish (unless you’re feeding the masses, here). Peel and slice apples and place in dish. Chop up Snicker bars (a food processor would probably be handy for this – but alas, I don’t own one). Sprinkle candy bar pieces over apples. Top with a dash or so of cinnamon. Bake for 15-25 minutes, depending on how soft you want the apples. Serve immediately with a scoop of … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: The Socialites

It’s official kids – Liz and Kate are inviting you to join us on Facebook, the premiere social networking site… or something like that. We are, afterall, two coffee-drinking, social-lovin’ butterflies. Seriously, we’ve been on there for a while, and we even have a few friends. I guess we kinda laid low in the beginning, posting our rants and adventures every now and then, but we really weren’t involved, as it were. Something was missing… During a conversation with Kate the other day, we realized what that missing link was – you! You guys are our support system! You guys are the ones that read the posts without prompts or an occasional bribe, if need be. You guys see the posts right here on the website – you’re regular readers who I am … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Report – dumb down for your readership

Imagine my happiness when Kate called the other day to point out a new button on our site, which rates Coffee Break with Liz and Kate at a solid 97 percent! I was thrilled, I tell ya. Until she went further into details of what kept us from getting a higher grade. Apparently – according to this website grader – Kate and I need to dumb it down, as it were. I was appalled. And quite frankly, I think you should be appalled, too. This isn’t rocket science here. It’s a coffee break, for crying out loud. A place where we get to talk to you guys about a little bit of everything, hopefully giving you a good laugh or a fabu recipe, a helpful piece of advice or a reason to … Read entire article »

My goodness! Have you lost weight? Your new haircut is very stylish! And that gourmet  dinner you fixed was simply delicious! Great job on that project! OK, just in case you haven’t figured this one out yet, Jan. 24 is National Compliment Day – a day when you would be well-served to say something nice to the people around you. Go ahead and give it a try. I think you’ll be pleased with the results. Ah, but there’s a kicker on this one. The 24th is also Opposite Day – a day so popular that SpongeBob Squarepants devoted an episode to it. Unfortunately, I can’t link you to a snippet of that episode, because everything I found was either riddled with profanity or otherwise edited. You’re just gonna have to take my … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know – chewing gum can slow down aging

Betcha didn’t know… chewing gum can slow down aging. Nothing ages your heart, brain, kidneys and skin faster that the stress hormone cortisol, says Ronald Klatz, M.D., of the American Academy of anti-Aging Medicine.  To the rescue: a piece of gum! Proof that it works: In an Australian study, two sets of people were asked to complete the same stressful tasks. The only difference: Half were told to chew sugarless gum, too. Result: Cortisol levels in the gum chewers 16 % lower than in the non-gum chewers! That’s because chewing gum boosts blood flow to the brain, easing the stress response. … Read entire article »

This week on The Bachelor –
week 3

Check out the updates from all of the episodes of this season’s, The Bachelor! This week on The Bachelor – week 3 The drama continued in this week’s episode of The Bachelor. So far, this season has been chock full of drama, surprises and some intense emotions. It’s no secret that the rest of the girls have chosen Vienna to be the token “hated” girl of the season. She has no idea when to shut up and obviously has serious issues relating to other girls. The episode starts with a one-on-one date between Jake and, of course, Vienna. It seems they both have a fear of heights (even though Jake is a pilot, hmmmm), so of course the logical date would be to go bungee jumping off a very high bridge. They … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Why we need the SarcMark

Ah, sarcasm. One of my favorite ways of communicating. In face-to-face conversations – even phone calls – sarcasm is fairly easy to detect. But for many, it’s much more difficult to spot in emails, texts, and for that matter, any form of written word. No more, I say. Now, we have the SarcMark – a new punctuation, uh, mark., perfect for making certain you’re never misunderstood again. Many of us already have our own ways of making sure the sarcasm in our correspondence is detectable. We may place certain phrases in quotations, or add an over-used LOL at the end of a sentence. But how much easier would things be if, with the stroke of two keys, you simply added the SarcMark? And if you happen to be on the receiving end of sarcasm, … Read entire article »
