Kate’s Escapades – The Great Halloween Costume Challenge!

In case you haven’t noticed over the past few weeks, I LOVE Halloween.  Here’s the thing…I am the mom of 7 kids and I spend every day all day long being the grown-up, mature, responsible adult in the house. Halloween is the ONE day a year that I get to play dress up and be like a kid and pretend I’m someone else. According to an article in Women’s World magazine, “Dressing up for Halloween is not just for the kids.  You can release tension by wearing a costume yourself.  Dressing up for Halloween  has been proven to help adults de-stress by letting them reveal other sides of themselves that are normally stifled.  What a great way to be a superhero or a vampire, for a day, without worrying about looking … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…This surprising Brain Booster

Surprising Brain Booster Ever had your teen show you how to work your new cell phone, only to find yourself completely stumped a few hours later?  Go to bed and give it another go in the morning.  A good night’s sleep can help you relearn complicated tasks – even if you forgot them the day before, according to the University of Chicago.  How does snoozing boost your recall?  Sleep seems to consolidate and stabilize your memory, restoring what your mind may have lost over the course of the previous day.  It also backs up the data (similar to backing up your computer’s hard drive) so that you won’t loose the information again. Liz’s rant: The healing power of soup

Every now and then, something happens to restore my faith in humanity. Prime example coming on the heels of my need for Mexican food at lunchtime, yesterday. Sometimes I like to get out, just me, myself and I, and have a quiet lunch. Maybe take a good book or whatever and just get away. So off I went to a neighborhood restaurant where I placed my order for a couple of tacos and waited on the chips and salsa. My waiter, God love him, brought my iced tea, chips and salsa, then returned a few minutes later with a bowl of soup! “You try soup, today? On the house?” Are you kidding? Of course, I’ll try it. It wasn’t like he’d just offered me a million dollars or anything – just a good, hot bowl … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: No more pig flu

You may recall a month and a half ago when I lamented my daughter’s illness, which could very well have been pig flu. The world will never know. Before we go any further, I think it’s important for me to point to the fact that I realize the seriousness of this outbreak. But I refuse to give it power over my life.  But I digress. Oddly enough, after my super-secret assignment to places I can’t tell you about, I got sick, too. Same thing as my daughter for the most part. But I never let myself consider that it was that pesky pig flu. In fact, I’ve exerted much effort to keep pig flu on the back burner of my mind. Oh, sure, I’ve been hearing the heart-wrenching reports of deaths of children (I … Read entire article »

Guest Rant: When Holidays Collide
by Ryane McKinnon

It’s almost Halloween, and the stores are full of candy, costumes, and decorations. Of course, next to the isles of plastic pumpkins and bats, there is usually a single row of red and green, which will expand slowly until it takes over the entire store by the middle of November. This is the part where you expect to hear me complain about the importance of keeping the holidays separate or the evils of consumerism. However, that is not where I’m going. I’m sure there are those who claim to disagree, but I can’t deny that my heart leaps when I see ornaments and snowflakes and Frosty the Snowman, no matter what time of year it is. Christmas is absolutely and undoubtedly the best holiday. Nothing else can compare, and I really believe … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know – this clever way to control pet hair

Betcha didn’t know… this clever way to control pet hair.  Before tossing out a pair of pantyhose that has a hole or run in it, use it to pamper your pet.  Just slip your hand in and scratch your cat or dog.  The loose hair will stick to the nylon instead of floating through the air or landing on furniture.  When you’re done, turn the nylon inside out to keep the loose hair inside, then throw out. *Enter a comment at the bottom of this or any other post, and be automatically entered in this week’s giveaway! … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Trying to tie one on…
a scarf, that is.

I love scarves, plain and simple.  I love how wearing a scarf somehow takes an ordinary hum drum outfit and turns it into something stylish and chic. Have you ever noticed how some people can wear scarves and just look so trendy and cool?  How they look as if they have just casually thrown on said scarf as they are running out the door on the way to a boutique or a trendy coffee shop. And have you ever tried to duplicate this look, carefully looping, twisting and tying your scarf only to wind up looking…well, ridiculous?  I have, over and over and over. I decided if I am going to continue to be a scarf wearer, it’s high time I finally learn  how to get this effortless look without expending so … Read entire article »
