Liz’s rant: Are you sure he’s sick?

He’d been fine when he left for school. Then I got the email from Colton’s teacher yesterday: Please Pick Him UP. Well! Did he pull the fire alarm? (no, that would be my 25-year-old back in the day). Did he have a fever? (No apparently, he just wasn’t “himself”). And 24 hours later, after being tested for pig flu, he appeared ready to go back to school… Until tonight. When the fever hit 102.5 and any mother worth her weight knew something was wrong. But what’s wrong? Well, I don’t know that. Tomorrow may tell. Meanwhile, I offer up the advice of popping the vitamin C if you’ve got it, and donning the surgical mask if you can find it. And if anyone winds up sick, be prepared for the greatest concern, made perfectly clear by Mr. … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Not in my trash can

I think we’ve all been there/done that where my hatred of snakes is concerned. In fact, I think I relayed a little story of the man in the carriage house who put a live snake in the trashcan several months ago, thinking the snake was dead. It was not. Flash forward to Saturday, when same carriage house inhabitant asked if my child had steered me away from the trashcan. Through the crawling of my skin, I managed to ask if, in fact, the snake was dead, this time. “I don’t kill anything,” came the reply, only to be answered by my next statement: “Then put it in your lap, take it for a drive in the country and DROP IT OFF!!” But there was no answer – at least not one to my liking. Just … Read entire article »

Guest Rant – Witches’ Night Out
by Linda Peterson

Witches’ Night Out Our family picked up a new Halloween tradition a few years ago – attending the Witches’ Night Out event at Gardner Village near Salt Lake City. Gardner Village is one of our required fall outings. It is a collection of historical buildings, a mill and some pioneer homes, which have been made into shops, a restaurant, and a petting zoo. They also have a venue for dinner theater. We stumbled into the whole Witches’ Night Out spectacle accidentally. A few years ago we ventured there on a Friday evening in mid-October, only to discover several elaborately costumed women dressed as witches wandering around. Thinking that they were employees adding to the festive atmosphere, we shrugged it off and made our usual stops – Sweet Afton’s, for … Read entire article »

Twilight Zone – New Moon Soundtrack Reviews

The New Moon Soundtrack is here and let me tell you…It’s awesome!  I just got my copy last night and listened to the entire cd.  The mood created by this music absolutely evokes the feel of the book. I would love this cd even if it had no ties to the upcoming New Moon movie.  It’s just good music, plain and simple. But don’t take my word for it…check out these other reviews. Entertainment Weekly – Grade A – “On a good day, film soundtracks enhance the moviegoing experience. At their best, they transcend it. The latest sonic accompaniment to Twilight‘s inescapable teen-vampire juggernaut — a swooning conveyance of girl-meets-undead-boy romance, delivered by some of the best established and emerging names in the indie stratosphere — may sway even the most committed … Read entire article »
