Liz’s rant: Give me back my Sundays

Something about having things to do on a Sunday afternoon is inherently irritating as it is. But having something to do at 2:30 p.m. when expecting to be done by 4 p.m. and not being done until almost 5:30 is just beyond my current tolerance level. The lead-in hadn’t helped much either. A zillion soccer fields and no place to park had traffic backed up 15 minutes, meaning we were far from being on a roll straight out of the gate. I’m guessing it was the just-named scenario that was at least in part responsible for the initial delay of game. So my daughter and I sat in the car for 20 minutes as the teams warmed up. Then we headed to the field for game time. But the game didn’t begin. Thirty minutes …

We have several fun – and fairly self-explanatory holidays this week. National Punch Day is on Sept. 20, followed by Miniature Golf Day and World Gratitude Day (on the 21st), and Checkers Day and Dog in Politics Day on the 23rd. While these are certainly noteworthy holidays, I call your attention to Elephant Appreciation Day, which we celebrate Sept. 23 (also my daughter’s birthday – Happy Birthday!!). Apparently, elephants are big fans (no pun intended) of pumpkins, so I guess you could visit your local zoo bearing a pumpkin or two. I say, instead, we remember the life – and death – of Mary the Elephant. “Murderous Mary” as she came to be known, was the star of Sparks Circus, which had travelled to Kingsport, TN in 1916 for one of its two-bit … Read entire article »

Guest Rant – Kate is the IDIOT, not Kanye!
by Jesse

Today’s rant comes to you courtesy of a reader named Jesse who got all hot and bothered when he read my article about Kanye West at MTV’s VMA Awards show. See Kate’s Escapade – Kanye West is an IDIOT! Here is Jesse’s reply to that article… Jesse said:  I completely disagree. What Kanye West did was unnecessary but nothing to be crucified over. This news should have gone no farther than simple water cooler talk but narrow minded people and the media continue to let it escalate. How come Kanye’s interruption is more of an un-forgivable act than Joe Wilson’s interruption of PRESIDENT Barack Obama? It’s because people, such as yourself Kate, take no interest in important matters, only simple pop culture. The facts remain: -Kanye West has over 12 Grammys in less than … Read entire article »

Betcha didn’t know… about the ZIP trick to maximize coupon savings.  Just go to on online coupon consolidator like, type in your ZIP code and you’ll get all sorts of coupon slips. And here’s an extra tip from Phil Lempert of – type in the ZIP code of a neighboring town for another whole set of coupons.  That’s because the site uses data to predict what shoppers from particular areas want.  “Towns with higher incomes, for example, tend to get coupons for healthier and more upscale products,” says Lempert. … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Why can’t I be perfect??

Oh, don’t I know you wonder where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to. Meanwhile, homegirl here has a slight, um… let’s call it a delay. I’ve lost my video – all of it. Taken on my Blackberry with media card in place. Two days in, the card decided it no longer existed. Well, isn’t that special… Meanwhile, I thought I’d be creative with a little video. Alas, no luck. So, being the vain person I am, I choose to keep you in suspense (oh, sure, I may drop a hint between now and then) and update you later. Frankly, though, this is my rant. And right now I’m not a happy camper. No video. The pictures still have to be doctored so that I look my beautiful best (thought I saw an … Read entire article »

All About Steve – Movie Review

Rating: PG 13 for sexual innuendo Genre: Comedy Starring: Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper, Thomas Hayden Church, Ken Jeong Director: Phil Traill Plot: Sandra Bullock plays eccentric crossword puzzle constructor Mary Horowitz who, after one short blind date, falls for handsome cable news cameraman Steve (Cooper). Convinced they are soul mates, Mary follows Steve across the country, encouraged by the self-serving actions of news reporter Hartman Hughes (Church). Along the way, Mary befriends an endearing group of oddballs who embrace her idiosyncrasies. –© Fox Kate says: 2 1/2 stars  The critics HATE this movie, calling it one of the worst movies ever.  It seems the public agrees as it’s done poorly in the ratings, even though Sandra Bullock usually guarantees some box office success. I did not HATE this movie, in fact I found myself laughing … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Kanye West is an IDIOT!

Fair warning readers…today’s escapade is definitely more of a rant than an escapade…because I am MAD! I am mad that a ridiculous man like Kanye West with his I’m-the-king-of-the-world mindset feels like he can rush the stage at the VMA’s and ruin what should have been the most amazing moment of 19 year old Taylor Swift’s life.  It takes a lot to really tick me off, I’m super even keeled by nature, but today I am one angry woman! I’ll describe the VMA scenario since Viacom has pulled all of the video footage from the internet. Taylor was just beginning her acceptance speech for the Best Female Artist Music Video.  Kanye West storms onto the stage and grabs the mic from Taylor and procedes to say to the audience that Beyonce (also … Read entire article »

Betcha didn’t know… These clever ways to care for your car. To polish up those dull hubcaps, rub a ball of aluminum foil on your chrome hubcaps to give then a shiny polish.  If you have rust, just dip the foil in cola and rub out the rust spots. Liz’s Rant: On assignment

That’s right – Liz is on assignment currently, at a super duper really top secret location. She returns Wednesday. Maybe if you ask nicely, she’ll tell you all about her trip. Meanwhile, keep this under your hat, ok? It’s  a secret! So until then, here’s a favorite post from Liz’s Rants from way back in the old days before our website was actually a website to keep you entertained. – Kate Liz’s Rants…I hate homework Remember when you were in first grade? Those were good times – at least for me. Hard work meant choosing between the lilac or hot pink crayon. My, how things change. Flash forward to 2009 and my son Colton’s first grade class. The assignment was straightforward, stapled to a massive 11-by-17 sheet of paper, folded in half. In honor … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…this surprising way to lower your blood pressure

Betcha didn’t know… this surprising way to lower your blood pressure.   Try snuggling up to someone you love.  It seems that as little as five minutes of cuddling – even with a pet – can drop your blood pressure by up to 30%.  “Hugging reduces stress and anxiety, so you cope more easily with the ups and downs of life, all things that help keep blood pressure safely low,” says cardiologist Harvey S. Hecht, M.D. of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York  City. … Read entire article »

Twilight Zone – New Moon tickets already on sale!

Hey New Moon fans. Did you know that the New Moon tickets are already on sale?  More than 2 months before the movie opens on Nov. 20?  I know that’s nuts, but if you’re wanting to go to a midnight showing (Thurs. night/Fri. morning) then you ought to start thinking about getting your tickets now.  I know here in Utah, we are possibly a little more nuts about these movies that perhaps in other states, but it’s still better to be safe than sorry, right?  I saw on my local news that most of the midnight showings around here are already sold out!  An easy way to buy advanced tickets is at Fandango.  Click here to check your local theaters for tickets and showtimes. (You can also purchase the tickets … Read entire article »
