Liz’s rant: Red squirrels, baby bats and dried leaves

So I’m on the phone with my dad over the weekend, when he interrupts me. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a red squirrel around here before.” I’m thinking, “Well, that’s nice. Shouldn’t you save your martinis until after lunch?” Thank goodness he went on to explain. For the first time in years, he’d actually witnessed a red squirrel in he and mom’s back yard while we were talking. He’d seen them before, just never in this neck of the woods. News to me, because I’d never heard of a red squirrel. I couldn’t wait to tell the kids. They’re both squirrel crazy as it is, and this would be one more little factoid they could store in their nutty little brains. Although he never mentioned anything about them flying, I was wondering if they could. We … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – A Whopper of a Baby Story

Why is it that whenever you get a group of women together, specifically mothers,  somehow the conversation will inevitably, and almost without fail, turn to the topic of childbirth?  Maybe it’s because we know that our only truly sympathetic and understanding audience on the topic is other women who have gone through the same thing. Try as we might, and heaven knows we have tried, mere words cannot begin to describe to a man the actual physical experience of childbirth.  They have no frame of reference with which to associate the experience, unless of course they have carried around a watermelon inside their stomach for 9 months and then tried to pop it out an opening…well, never mind..you get the point. We mothers need someone who has been through it.  It’s … Read entire article »

Twilight Zone – The Host to be a Movie

Stephenie Meyer, author of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” reveals on her website that The Host will be made into a major motion picture. The rights to Meyer’s 2008 novel The Host, a love story involving humans possessed by aliens, have been picked up by producers Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler as a potential follow-up to her successful “Twilight” books and movies, according to Variety. No studio is attached yet, though “Lord of War” director Andrew Niccol’s name is being mentioned as screenwriter and director. The Host follows Chicagoan Melanie Stryder who, in a world where humans are implanted with seemingly benevolent alien bugs, resists the control of her parasite, dubbed The Wanderer. Melanie sets off to Arizona to find her family and boyfriend, who are members of an … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Christmas in September

Before any of you start with me, understand that I love Christmas. It’s by far my favorite time of the year – and indeed the most wonderful time of the year (thank you, Johnny Mathis). Just not in September. Seriously, I about dropped my teeth as I walked through a couple of  stores last week and spied the zombie and Freddie Kruger costumes right next to the over-sized inflatable Mickey’s Christmas Carol yard ornaments. At that point, we hadn’t even crossed into the first official day of the fall season, for crying out loud! And now that is officially Fall, what’s wrong with celebrating this season? Why not watch the leaves change and pick a pumpkin or two, eat a caramel apple and make a Halloween costume? Why must we be inundated with Christmas … Read entire article »

The very first bomb dropped by the Allies on Berlin in World War II killed the only elephant in the Berlin Zoo. Weatherman Willard Scott was the first Ronald McDonald. If one places a tiny amount of liquor on a scorpion, it will instantly go mad and sting itself to death. (Who was the sadist who discovered this??) Bruce Lee was so fast that they actually had to s-l-o-w film down so you could see his moves. That’s the opposite of the norm. … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades -Super Easy and Yummy Chicken and Dumplings

Today, dear overworked I-don’t-even-have-time-to-think-so-how-am-I-supposed-to-find-time-to-cook readers, I present to you another one of my “Cheater” recipes.  FYI…a “Cheater” recipe is a quick and easy recipe that uses mostly store bought ready made ingredients and just a little bit of  ingenuity to turn it into a delicious tasting homemade dish. It seems I may be making good use of my cheater ideas in the near future, as I have now re-entered the world of working outside of the home, in addition to keeping Coffee Break fun and interesting for you, and trying to make sure my family and house don’t completely fall apart. I am sure to find myself very short on cooking time. And as if all of that weren’t enough to keep me out of trouble, I am now compiling my … Read entire article »

Liz’s rants: Study this…

Call it a morning ritual, but I must get my morning dose of Wall Street Journal’s radio program on waking. It goes hand in hand with the cup(s) of coffee. Yesterday’s broadcast brought laughter – and a bit of disgust – as I listened. Some researchers from I-don’t-know-where had done a study, learning that a person is more likely to die as the result of a bee sting than shark attack. More likely to die in a car wreck than from a gun shot. Talk about your eureka moments. Not. I figured the next epiphany would be that those who eat a case of Twinkies a day were most likely to gain weight.  Or maybe those who stand in the rain tend to get wet. Seriously. Who pays people to figure this stuff out? … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know – These Odd Facts

A rat can last longer without water than a camel. Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks or it will digest itself. The dot over the letter “i” is called a tittle. A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top. A female ferret will die if it goes into heat and cannot find a mate. … Read entire article »
