Guest Rant – My Head is Going to Explode. Literally.
By Ryane McKinnon

Let me begin by telling you a bit about my personality. I am the kind of person who always eats two same colored M&Ms at a time. I have my closet coordinated not only by color, but also by degree of warmth. I am a firm believer that everything should have a place. Suffice it to say, I am a very particular person. Of course, such a meticulous temperament is accompanied by several bizarre pet peeves. Almost every time I tell someone about one of my pet peeves, they reply, “I never noticed.” But I always notice and cringe every time. The worst of my multitude of pet peeves is exaggerating numbers. For example, how many times have you heard someone say, “On a scale from 1 to 10, it’s an 11!” … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…

Betcha didn’t know… you could stop your snoring with bananas.  The main cause for snoring is sagging muscles in the back of the throat which vibrate loudly during sleep.  Eating a banana before bed may help ease the problem.  The phospholipids found in bananas help prevent the collapse of the airway during sleep – and the effect lasts about 6 hours.  According to researcher Tom van der Touw, Ph.D., “Lubricating the problem tissues with bananas offers a cheap and tasty solution for patients who snore.” Enjoy your Coffee Break! … Read entire article »

America’s Got Talent – Quarter Finals – Season 4 – 8/19/09

This week on America’s Got Talent we had 12 more performers vying for five spots – 4 audience picks and one judge’s choice.  It’s a tough choice this week as there was a lot more talent in this group than in the previous two groups. Too bad they didn’t split the talent up more evenly because to me it seems like more than 5 acts should be moving on from this group. Here’s a video clip of Bri… and then on with the contestants and judge’s comments AND who made it through. The 4 audience picks moving on are: Kenny Ou Mario & Jenny Lawrence Beamen Hario Torres And the Judges pick is: FootworKINGz ~Kate Enjoy your Coffee Break! … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rant: Lemonade sale turns sour

OK – raise your hand if you ever set up a Kool-Aid stand as a kid. See? Thousands of you participated in this rite of childhood. If memory serves, the stand usually included a red wagon, a sign, a Tupperware pitcher and Dixie cups. Make no mistake – it’s not like we got rich with our thirst-quenchers. But somewhere in the backs of our minds, I’d bet we never ruled out that possibility. For me, lemonade stands led to other ideas of sheer brilliance though – namely in the form of the bakery I wanted to start in a dirt “room” under the garage. While it stored our sleds and sporting equipment, I was convinced I could clear out the space and bake, bake, bake. Then I coulda struck gold. Suffice to … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rant: Cooking can be dangerous to your health

Preparations for dinner last week had started innocently enough. I’d made the decision to fix salmon patties. Which brings me to my first segue. Do people “fix” dinner or “make” dinner. It would seem that fixing dinner would imply something was broken. Ergo my latest kitchen rule: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Back to the salmon patties. This is actually one of my favorite  – and fairly painful – things to fix. At least it was. My standard operating procedure includes mixing all the ingredients (including seasoned bread crumbs) about an hour before I’m ready to saute them. Makes the chore of forming those little patties much easier. Such was my SOP last week. About six p.m., I readied the pan, warmed up the olive oil and poured the extra … Read entire article »
