Liz’s rant: Of mice and mad

Remember when I had a little issue with a mouse in the house? Well, they’re back. And it’s not even late fall. I likely wouldn’t have known had I not decided to fix muffins for breakfast (yet more proof that cooking is over-rated at best). I heated up the oven and reached into the oven drawer to get the muffin tin, only to find nasty little black pellets in 11 of 12 muffin rounds. Alas the muffin baking was promptly canceled and I was sick at my stomach. I yelled for my son and announced the dilemma, at which point he started making those creeped-out gestures. I told him we were in for another fight – that I’d need his help with this one (at which point, he asked to go out and … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…How to Relieve Back Pain Tip #4

Betcha didn’t know… you could relieve back pain by eating circulation-boosting grapes.  “Your back’s shock-absorbing disks depend on nearby blood vessels to bring healing nutrients and oxygen, so improving blood flow is a great way to speed healing of damaged tissue,” says Dr. Sinel.  And a recent study published in the journal Vascular Pharmacology suggests just eating a heaping cup of grapes daily can relax blood vessels, significantly increasing blood flow to damages back tissue. Another proven circulation booster – avoid cigarette smoke which tightens arteries. … Read entire article »

Guest Rant: Dr. Fly, the experiment guy

Hello, dear Coffee Break readers! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dr. Fruit E. Fly. Some of you might remember me from the school lab. In fact, I’m still there – constantly experimenting with everyday household items, finding new ways to make your life easier. Oh, it’s a thankless job, alright. But it’s the only job I have. Oh well, I’ll save the rest of my troubles for my daily therapy session. Meanwhile, I thought you might enjoy some of these ingenious uses for Coca Cola. Sometimes I surprise myself with all this knowledge. So grab a can of Coke and let’s experiment: Remove grease stains, rust stains and blood stains Clean oil stains from a garage floor Loosen a rusty bolt by pouring Coke on it. Watching it fizzle is half … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Early Morning Blockparty with Loaded Gun

This is a 6am escapade I’d rather forget, but it’s an escapade nonetheless, so here goes readers… So the other morning I was sleeping in my cozy bed, fans in the windows blowing in the cool mountain air that comes through the canyon every night, when I was rudely awakened from my peaceful rest by a horrific crashing sound.  A sound so loud even a few of my “dead to the world” sleeping daughters woke up.  By the time we threw on some clothes  and made it out the front door to see what all the commotion was all about, we found what  looked like a neighborhood block party in progress directly in front of our house. Twelve people in all, out to see the cause of the loud crashing sound.  … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t know…How to Relieve Back Pain Tip #2

Betcha didn’t know… that standing up often helps to ease the pressure on your back.  Standing up often, even if it’s just for a moment, reduces your risk of back pain by as much as 67%, according to research done at the University of Pennsylvania.  By contrast, sitting for long periods of time at your desk or even in your favorite chair puts 40% more pressure on your spine, which can eventually compress nerves and result in pain.  If you have a hard time remembering to get up, just set your cell phone alarm or times to go off once every hour as a reminder. … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t know…How to Relieve Back Pain Tip #3

Betcha didn’t know…you can avoid injuries and pain by clocking out by 5p.m. A University of Massachusetts study  recently found that folks who regularly work overtime have a 61% higher risk of on-the-job injuries compared with those who punch out after eight hours – and back pain is their number one problem.  “Long hours mean little relief from stress hormone overloads, which trigger chronic inflammation and tension in back muscles, doubling your risk of painful spasms,” says clinical researcher Shawn Talbott, Ph.D., author of Natural Solutions for Pain-Free Living.” If you can’t get away on time, try listening to soothing music while you work, or use it to decompress as you travel home to relieve the stress which causes back pain. … Read entire article »

Since the cameras on The Bachelorette stopped running, this relationship has been swamped with controversy. Two women have come forward claiming they were carrying on relationship with Swiderski while he was trying to win Jillian’s heart during the filming of the reality show. Bethany Steffen, 25, a Chicago marketing developer, claims Swiderski sent her this racy text  “Bring beer and condoms,” on June 3, after he was already engaged to Jillian. Liz’s Rant: While I was sleeping

I can’t imagine anything more technically challenging, mood-altering, or generally uncalled for than waking up on a Monday morning only to discover you’ve been hacked. As in by a hacker. An internet bully, if you will. When I jilted my computer screen out of sleep mode (they get tired, too, ya know), the first thing I saw was a full-size image telling me my security had been compromised: “Click here to clean up your computer NOW!!” Needless to say, I tried to “x” out of the box, knowing full will that clicking “OK” or “Cancel” would do me more harm than good. No go, though. Another window popped up, then another. And no, Alt F4 wouldn’t work, either. I wanted to cry. The worst part, though, was the fact that I’d left my free … Read entire article »

Kate Goes on an Adventure – Hot Air Ballooning!

Last week I was lucky enough to go on another grand adventure…this time on a  Hot Air Balloon ride from Valley View Ballooning. If the majority of the population were to make themselves a Bucket List (you know, a list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket), I’m going to guess that “Hot Air Ballooning” would be on the lists of a fairly large portion of of those people. It would be on mine for sure.  Hot air ballooning just seems so peaceful and romantic and adventurous, doesn’t it? Let me tell you, I was not disappointed.  It was even more amazing, exhilarating, and beautiful than I could have imagined. I have to admit that the night before my hot air ballooning adventure, I was feeling a … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…How to Relieve Back Pain Tip #1

Betcha didn’t know… this simple wake-up trick that soothes your nerves.  For most people, back pain is worse in the morning than at night.  Why?  Extra fluid seeps between your disks while you sleep, and if you twist or bend suddenly upon waking, that fluid puts pressure on the spine’s delicate nerves – almost ensuring that you’ll flinch with pain. Here’s the solution…Rise slowly and gently.  “First, move to the edge of the bed, roll onto your side and hang your feet off the mattress,” advises back surgeon Neil Kahanovits, M.D., of the Center for Orthopedics in  West Orange, New Jersey.  “Then, use your arms to gently push yourself upright, keeping your back as straight as possible.”  Start today and you could reduce your back pain by 23%, say experts at the … Read entire article »

Liz’s rant: Christmas in August

It’s not like this is the first time that my youngest has mentioned something he wants for Christmas. In fact, I think he secretly started his list the day after Christmas 2008. It’s just that the list is intensifying – and it’s only August. Oddly enough, the only thing on said list is Legos. Lots of Legos. He’s been a building freak for several years now, and unfortunately outgrew the “age appropriate” Legos with his first kit. Now, those kits marked 12 and up don’t even faze him. He simply opens each package of blocks, promptly dumps them on the kitchen table or the floor, and proceeds to build until the masterpiece is complete. The truly unfortunate part of this comes in the reality that the more difficult the kit, the more pieces. The … Read entire article »
