Betcha Didn’t Know…

Betcha didn’t know… that eating 1 cup of blueberries a day will boost belly fat loss by up to 12%, according to E. Mitchell Seymour, research scientist at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center.  “Blueberries activate a gene that is responsible for burning belly fat while also turning down a gene that stores fat.” As an added bonus, the same study shows that  blueberries lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, and help maintain steadier blood sugar levels – all factors in lowering your risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Liz’s Rants: The wienie roast

Here’s the thing. If you read my weekly Palooza column (and if you like really strange holidays, you should), you already know how the Cancer Project plans to send hot dogs hiking. But it seems they’ve gone to new heights. They are now suing Kraft (makers of Oscar Mayer dogs), Sara Lee, Nathan’s Famous, Sabrett, and Hebrew National, demanding they place wiener warning (WARNING: Ol’ Frank here causes CANCER) labels on packages sold in New Jersey. Sure, the official warning label will probably be worded a bit differently, but you get the point – and can probably almost hear their staff meeting pep talk: “Today, we ban hot dogs in New Jersey! Tomorrow, we take over the world!!” Oddly enough, turns out the Cancer Project is a vegan advocacy group… wait a … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants: The shopping police

Here’s the thing. My recent trip to a local super mart store seemed to culminate without instance. Until I saw my receipt. Near the bottom of the print-out, a section marked “Healthy Living” or something to that end, caught my eyes, informing me that I’d made $2.34 worth of healthy purchases. The receipt went on to say that this intrusion would help me with identifying healthy deductions for other needs. What?!?! At first, I thought perhaps I’d purchased an item that could be considered tax-deductible or whatever where insurance was concerned. Since I’d purchased nothing that qualified off hand, I perused my receipt. I began with the real groceries – blackberries, strawberries, pineapple (my new favorite fruits to have on hand), some sliced cheese, rye bread, corned beef, and sauerkraut (guess what I was … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…

Betcha didn’t know…there will soon be a refrigerated beach in Dubai (Yep! The same place I told you about in yesterday’s betcha didn’t know…that has an indoor ski slope.) The beach will be at the Palazzo Versace hotel and will include a system of heat-absorbing pipes built under the sand and giant wind blowers, designed to keep tourists cool in the searing 40-50C heat. (That’s 104 to 122F.) According to Soheil Abedian, president of Palazzo Versace, “We will suck the heat out of the sand to keep it cool enough to lie on.” Palazzo Versace will be completed sometime in late 2009 to 2010. // ~Kate Enjoy your Coffee Break! … Read entire article »

Guest Rant – RoadTrip Soundtrack
by Megan McKinnon

RoadTrip Soundtrack Once the weather starts to warm up and the sky is bright blue with big fluffy, Simpson’s-like clouds… that’s when I start to think about vacations. My favorite type of vacation is going anywhere near an ocean, but to me, the most fun part of vacationing is getting there. The thing about roadtrips is that it doesn’t matter if you’re going to another part of your state or across the country. What makes a roadtrip a roadtrip, is who you’re with and THE MUSIC. The perfect music and the long drive is what makes your vacation more than a trip, it makes it a journey. As the day of my sure to be best roadtrip ever grows nearer and nearer, I start to research the perfect songs, to make the perfect … Read entire article »

Kate’s Escapades – Cowboy Wannabe

Last night I made my annual trek down the road  to the Spanish Fork rodeo. I live in a city full of real honest-to-goodness authentic cowboys and once a year I get brave and pull out my cowboy attire and become a cowboy wannabe. I’m pretty sure the “real” cowboys can spot a cowboy wannabe from miles away. Perhaps it’s because my cowboy hat came from Pac Sun in the mall. You know the ones… made to look bent and worn and well used.  Perhaps it’s because my jeans aren’t quite tight enough and don’t say Wrangler on the butt (oh and my legs aren’t bowed.) Maybe it’s because I wear sandals instead of cowboy boots. Or just possibly it’s because I don’t quite have the famous Spanish … Read entire article »

Betcha didn’t know…you could go snow skiing in Dubai! “Where is Dubai you say?”  Dubai is located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which is in the Middle East. Are you asking yourself, “How could there be skiing in Dubai?  Isn’t it HOT there?” Of course it’s hot there, that’s why there is an INDOOR ski slope. Ski Dubai in Dubai Emirates Mall started in December 2005 and is the worlds third largest indoor ski slope, measuring 400 meters and using 6000 tons of snow. Dubai skiing resort is the first Dubai indoor ski slope to open. A second indoors ski slope is the Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome in Dubailand which is not open yet. Kate’s Escapades – Cooking By Numbers

It’s an hour till dinner.  You have no plan.  You don’t want to run to the store, but you can’t come up with anything to cook with what you have on hand.  Does this sound familiar?  Most days, this is the story of my life. What if you could just mark a check-list of  the items you have in your cupboards and fridge, and then someone would tell you recipe after recipe of what you could make with what you have?  Sound too good to be true? I found this cool and crazy website the other day and I immediately thought of Liz. The site is called… Cooking By Numbers. You see, Liz  is somewhat challenged in the cooking department.  It’s not like she CAN”T cook.  She has the necessary and knowledge skills to … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…

Betcha didn’t know…that it’s the MALE seahorse that gets pregnant and carries the babies.  According to Alison Scarratt, the curator of fishes at the Baltimore Aquarium,  “Seahorses are the only kind of animal in the world in which it’s the male that gets pregnant.” The female injects eggs into the male, who has a pouch where the eggs are fertilized and nurtured until they’re born. A seahorse, depending on the species, can deliver between 15 and 1,000 babies at a time and can deliver in the morning and get pregnant again in the afternoon. Then again, the delivery only takes half an hour. Enjoy your Coffee Break! … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants: Putt this…

Maybe I hadn’t thought through all the details when I agreed to take my son to play putt putt golf with a couple of his friends. So much so that I volunteered to take him to a movie, swimming for a week (assuming the temperature climbs back over that 70-degree mark), and even asked him to name his price – the price that would get me out of 18 holes of self-imposed torture. I say torture because I know how difficult it can be to have more than two people playing putt putt at one time. The wait between putting would be treacherous, the kids couldn’t be counted on to keep their own score (oh, and yes – we would keep score), and I would lose all patience watching them hit a … Read entire article »
