Kate’s Escapades – The Dogs Ate My Couch!

The Dogs Ate My Couch Okay, so maybe that is a slight exaggeration. They didn’t exactly eat the whole couch, but they might as well have. There is now a dinner plate-sized hole in the back cushion of my living room couch. When they decided to go on the prowl for a midnight snack  last night , they couldn’t have chosen to munch on my old,  black velvet couch in the basement…nope, they decided, instead, to snack on my nice, new tan leather couch which sits prominently in my living room. In fact, it’s the first thing you see when you come into my house. Geez. Maybe now is a good time to give you some back story here. I have two big dogs. I never intended … Read entire article »

TV Talk – The Bachelorette

New Season of the Bachelor. Jake returns! See which 15 girls made Jake’s first cut. Click here. On last nights episode of The Bachelorette… Jillian went to the hometowns of the five remaining bachelors: Kypton, Jesse, Wes, Michael, and Reid.    In a surprise move, Jake (my fav who got kicked off last week) came back to tell Jillian what a two-faced sleaze-bag Wes is and that he has a girl friend. Wes, who has a girl friend and is only there to promote his music career Sweet Jake, who Jillian kicked off last week, and is my pick for the next bachelor Jillian made a stupid move and ignored Jake’s warning and gave Wes a rose anyway.  Also Ed, who left voluntarily a few episodes ago, came back and asked for another chance, … Read entire article »

Liz’s Rants: Life on the edge

I knew we were headed for trouble after hearing that Nestle’s refrigerated cookie dough had been recalled. Several cases of E-coli were reported, prompting store owners to pull every flavor of dough from their shelves quicker than I could say, “cookie, please?” Then came the call from my mother, who is physically unable to offer less than three deserts at family get-togethers. One of the choices the Sunday prior had been the cookie brand in question, hot out of the oven. My son was momentarily devastated. “I’m I gonna get sick now? Does this mean we’ll never have chocolate chip cookies again?” I tried to explain we could have them whenever we chose – we just wouldn’t be able to buy that brand – at least for a while. It’s no secret that cookie dough … Read entire article »

Betcha Didn’t Know…

Grilling Tips Instead of spraying your hot grill with a non-stick spray (who can say explosion?),  soak a paper towel with cooking oil and use a tong to rub the towel over the grill rack. You can also get an extra basting brush (use this one only for greasing the grill, please), and brush the oil onto the rack. Voila! It’s the perfect answer to keeping food from sticking! Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen PG-13

Rated: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, language, some crude and sexual material, and brief drug material Genre: Action/Adventure Staring: Shia LaBeough, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel Director: Michael Bay Plot: Sam Witwicky (LaBeough) goes off to college and discovers his brain has been implanted with a secret robot code that will help the Decpticons destroy the sun. Kate says: 1 1/2 stars      First off let me just tell you that if you felt ok about letting your younger kids see the first movie, you may want to consider seeing this one first before you let little Johnny or Janie tag along.  Along with amping up the violence and action (there’s a 50 minute battle scene which felt at least double that to me), director Micheal Bay has also amped up the bad language (since … Read entire article »

TV Talk – So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance Thursday night reality dancing show on FOX. The show started out with 20 contestants (10 men & 10 women) dancing in pairs.  Each week one man and one woman is eliminated.  America picks the bottom 3 couples, and the judges decide which 2 of these bottom 6 go home. Let me just say that the host Cat annoys the crap out of me, and judge Mary Murphy is so obnoxious I can hardly bear it, BUT the dancers are soooo talented, and that I why I love this show.  (The highlight of my dancing career is tap dancing to The Beer Barrel Polka when I was about 10 in New Ulm, Mn. – the polka capitol of the USA.  A proud day…hee hee.) My fav female dancers this … Read entire article »

TV Talk…I’m a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here

Kate here, and I’ve decided to come out of the closet to tell you readers that I am a BIG fan of reality TV. I know, I know, some of you are thinking, “Who watches that garbage?”  Well, I do.  It’s my guilty pleasure.  It’s how I relax after a long hard day.  And I should probably tell you that sometimes I actually vote.  I realize that fact alone is what pushes me over the edge from being a casual viewer, to a reality TV addict.  (I should also tell you that as Liz is reading this post, she’s probably shaking her head in dismay, as she cannot relate.  She’s probably never even heard of most of the reality shows I watch.) Tonight was the Grand Finale of  I’m a Celebrity, Get … Read entire article »

TV Talk – The Bachelorette

New Season of the Bachelor. Jake returns! See which 15 girls made Jake’s first cut. Click here. The Bachelorette Spoiler Alert! I promised myself that I would never again watch The Bachelor or The Bachelorette after last seasons Bachelor fiasco where Jason Mesnick proposed to one girl and then dumped her on live tv  and picked the another girl. BUT here I am…sucked into another season with Jillian Harris choosing from 30 eligible bachelors. Tonight’s episode started off with 8 men - Jesse (cute and normal), Robby (way too immature for her), Michael (a break dance instructor…seriously?), Jake (my fav), Wes (cute, but a two-faced slime bucket), Kypton (I like him, but what kind of name is Kypton), Reid (too neurotic), and Tanner (his foot fetish creeps me out). Robby didn’t get a rose after his one-on-one … Read entire article »

The Proposal PG-13

Rated PG-13 for sexual content, nudity and language Staring: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Betty White Director: Anne Fletcher Plot:  A not-so-nice editor, Maragret Tate (Bullock), discovers she is about to be deported back to Canada because her green card has expired, and realizes her only option to stay in the good old USA and keep her high powered job is to become engaged to and marry a US citizen.  Enter Andrew Paxton (Reynolds), her under-appreciated and  much abused assistant. Kate says: 3 1/2 stars     I realize this movie follows the typical romantic comedy formula – they hate each other, then they love each other,  then they almost lose each other…you know the drill, BUT it actually works this time.  Bullock and Reynolds play off each other so well and … Read entire article »
